Hello Tanya...I am almost 3 years out with no hip on the left side. I'm on lifelong antibiotics to suppress chronic osteomyelitis (bone infection). Are you mobile at all with walker or crutches? I'm so sorry you are going through all this and I'm hoping I can preserve my Right hip so I can continue to walk with walker and crutches. I would really be interested in how you are getting around. I live in Michigan, USA.
Hi Cindy, from most of the comments I've been reading the prognosis have not been good. My 39 yr old son was born with osteomyelitis and has no hip/spacer on the left side of his body. Dr's at 2 yrs old decided to take what was left of the femur fuse it on a 30 degree angle. He also has about a 3 inch discrepancy in length. I encouraged him to look into seeing what could be done to give him more mobility in hopes of improving his quality of life. But after reading all these comments with people contracting multiple infections and having to have multiple procedures I'm not sure it's a good idea. We are located in NJ.

Hi A Jordan.....I'm so sorry to read this about your son and what he has endured his entire life! I'm 72 years old and it's been hard for me to adjust with such a disability. I have chronic osteomyelitis and was on lifelong antibiotics and getting around quite well with walker and crutches. Stupid of me, but I decided to go see a revision specialist to see if maybe I could get another hip, even though surgeon who did original surgery said 'never'. I had to go off my oral antibiotics for a month, then plan was to get hip aspiration to check for infection and then decide from there as they wouldn't operate if I was already infected. I only made it 2 weeks off antibiotics and my infection was raging again, ended up in hospital for 5 days, and now PIC line at home with IV antibiotics for 6 weeks. I'm weak on that side and only able to toe touch with walker at this time, but I'm praying I can get back to where I was before and I will accept that. I was even riding adult tricycle outside and exercise bike inside the home. My husband makes my shoes for me by adding extra soles to bottom to even out my legs. I'm about 2.5 to 3 inches shorter on the left. May I ask, how does your son get around? Walker, crutches???? Is he on life long antibiotics? I'm a retired nurse and never really thought about this type of thing until it happened to me. I'll say a prayer for your son.......Cindy
Well this is very interesting, considering I have been a member of this forum for at least 5 months and have been looking for someone, like me who is living without a hip joint. I have found no one until just now. Everyone else is living with a spacer and awaiting a 2 stage or living without a hip until their staph infection is gone. February will be the one year mark of having no hip joint. My whole saga should be on this site somewhere. Maybe you could try to find it and contact me and then we can share some advice on how we're both getting around. That would be great. It's been a long day of pain and I can't sit in this chair anymore but please, do get back to me. I'm actually very excited to find someone without a hip like me. Robin
I was born with a congenital hip dislocation and had 3 surgeries between the ages of 2 and 15. At the age of 26 (1985) I had a THR. There were 3 revisions, the last in 2006 at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. In 2013 I was admitted with sepsis, a massive mrsa infection which later mutated into visa. March 2014 the prosthesis was removed and I spent 2 1/2 years in a wheelchair and on IV antibiotics most of that time. Last summer my case was taken over by another surgeon who deemed it unwise to try another revision and we agreed. A new infectious disease doctor changed antibiotis and I am now mrsa/visa free. I have no hip and no spacers, the femur is significantly shorter, leg length difference is 3 1/2 inches. The new surgeon has me walking with walker and crutches and a 3 inch lift on my shoe. 3 months physical therapy to strengthen muscles atrophied from so much time in the wheelchair. I am about to move to one crutch, and the goal is a cane. Xrays show excellent build up of scar tissue supporting the leg. My original question was wondering if there are others having the same experience.
Not exactly but I just started with no hip on Thursday. I have a total of 5 surgeries. Took a ltt and think I'm allergic to the .03 percent nickel in the implant tried all the metals think I need a coated ti nitride.

This has been a great forum to connect with others who have gone through Girdlestone Procedure and now have no hip joint. I had Girdlestone 3 years ago today. For anyone interested, there is a new forum on Facebook started by a friend I met online who also has Girdlestone. It's called "Girdlestone Procedure Outcomes". We are there to support each other, if you would like to join. If this type of post is not allowed on here, please remove.
I was in a car accident in 2014 and shattered my pelvis which led to needing a total hip replacement 2 years later in 2016. In 2022 I developed an infection MSSA a staph infection without any symptoms. I ended up having a football size abscess and in the hospital for 3 weeks where they did a washout and tried to save my prosthetic hip and tried to put in a spacer. I went home with a PICC line and was on antibiotics for 2 weeks and ended up back in the hospital due to picking up a second bacteria while I've been in the hospital. At a time of my car accident when I shattered my pelvis they had put it back together with screws and a metal plate which surgeons believed was housing in the bacteria so I returned to the hospital where surgeons decided the metal should come out. Two more surgeries another wash out and attempting to get out but they could for the metal in my pelvis and hip. My orthos are very leery about another hip replacement because of the metal that's in there however I am willing to take that chance so I have been to Mass general hospital in Boston where a surgeon was willing to do the surgery but with many stipulations and also called it an elective surgery. I'm able to walk without crutches or cane however it's painful and it's a significant limp so I use crutches. I have a 3 and 1/2 in length discrepancy which causes my body to compensate and is the reason for a lot of the pain i experience in my knee and my lower back. I Don't have much bone left to work with on my pelvis so it's a one shot deal as far as the replacement goes. I went to the Cleveland Clinic in January and went with a surgeon who's confident and wants fix this for me. If he doesn't have enough bone to work with then he is able to 3D print or fashion something to attach the joint to which is very promising. This past month I've had a robotic assist CT scan and an aspiration to test whether there's any bacteria or fungi in the joint area in both just came back good hoping to get this going and walking unassisted by summer or fall at the latest, 🤞🤞🤞

The rate isn't that high.
