Voluntarily Generated Piloerection
To my understanding, voluntarily generated piloerection (VGP), the ability to produce goosebumps at will with no particular external stimulation present, has been scarcely studied, and no true biological mechanisms have been presented as the possible explanation for why this is possible. I am posing this as an open ended question, feel free to contribute with any level of formality/knowledge whatsoever:
What do you think are the mechanisms behind VGP, and what are potential implications of its existence for the patient and/or for science?

I happen to have it and some of the things I can note is that it can be used to detect open wounds and healing wounds (healed up but skin there hasn't completely formed), triggering it causes a little sensation (or pain), not sure if any form of wave is being emmitted from it (the injury) seeing as the whole sensation feels like a wave but there's that. Also if you happen to over stimulate it, it doesn't happen to work well, especially if you are sitting down. It's appears to be stronger in general when standing up, also happens to be stronger when you picture yourself pinching the back of your head (although that's not the only way to trigger it)
Also I am a very open person and it is said that one of the preliminary findings is that it is related to extreme openness.
Another thing is that, seeing as they say it shouldn't be possible to trigger it (goosebumps voluntarily) as it is an higher brain function, I have been able to teach myself skills, like difficult unique body related skills. I can shoot spit from my tongue on command (after stimulating it with salty or peppery food or waiting a while for it to fill up), I could bend my ears inside out, I can fold my lips inside out and let it remain in that position (I can control the bottom lip on demand once the upper one has been set in position and turn it back to normal on demand, amongst alot more that I have probably forgotten (I did most of these when I was a child). Everything I listed here was copied from friends or people because I thought they were cool at the time and I'm pretty sure they are not things everyone can probably learn, so there's probably that.
I was also able to stop myself from dreaming as a child on multiple occassions for close to 6 months at a time (I can't ascertain if my brain actually stopped it or stopped me from experiencing or remembering it, but I did at least 2 to 3 times), it continued because I subconciously missed it. I have been able to do it in my teenage years but it has been much harder and honestly speaking it's not something I put much interest in and it was probably not something I was open to. Also ,I wanted the dreams to stop because I was having nightmares and dreams about falling and stuffs like that, so that's why.
I'm still trying to figure it out, the most confusing part to me is the feeling that comes with it, feels way too special and unique too just be nothing, and seeing as some people can trigger it and send it to certain body parts ( I have noticed that I am starting to get better at this also). I won't be shocked if it is a form of communication with our body itself.
As to the implications, I feel it's just the only true measure of openness we can presently quantify in humans.
How many person has this ability ?
I can activate my goosebumps effortlessly.
But I barely used it because when I noticed that it's a not common thing I was afraid that's something healthy.
Since their was a VGP study in 2018 and some people use this ability to increase their physical performance.
I'll try this week ...
Gotta ask, has the frequency of goosebumps been associated with increased hair growth?
My hairdresser said that my hair growth faster than normal.
On the internet just search "taiwan bald goosebump"
You and your hairdresser are going to enjoy this:https://hsci.harvard.edu/goosebumps-hair-follicle-stem-cells#:~:text=It%20secretes%20a%20protein%20that,regenerate%20the%20new%20hair%20follicle.
I've experienced the same thing, and I don't even have a hairdresser! Hair regrowth on my legs, arms top of my head. My wife says on my back where I never had it before!
It's driven by the sympathetic nervous system! Not the parasympathetic, tho I suspect the 2 have to be well-balanced.
@adriancastro here is the clinical definition: [pil- + erection]
Elevation of the hair above the skin as a result of contraction of the arrector pili muscles. This may occur after exposure to the cold or during adrenergic stimulation.
SYN: SEE: cutis anserina; SEE: goose bumps; SEE: goose flesh; SEE: horripilation
I can do it. I also have a number of health issues that may impact it. I have EDS, Chiari, POTS, ADHD, I'm autistic, etc. I flex a muscle in my neck & take a deep breath. Its like when I move my ears back (another thing I can do) but I take it farther. It feels like deep muscles on the side of my spine flex as well as ones all around my head. I can't say it serves much of a purpose, but it does help cool me off a bit when I'm hot. I'd love to be part of a study or something.
My significant other can voluntarily cause goosebumps whenever he wants to. We have tried to search for a reasons as to why this happens and we have only found in the last 100 years three studies done on it on three people so we would like to find out more possibly? Or where to go or who to call?
He tried one time to see how long he could keep the goosebumps on his body and he lasted up to five minutes, but he gets a headache instantly right afterwards and how we know he can do it voluntarily whenever he wants to. He can also do it in a hot tub And obviously hot tub full of hot water lol
