Visual Escapes and Daily Inspirations: Share Yours

Posted by John, Volunteer Mentor @johnbishop, Mon, Mar 16 6:25pm

Let's create a space to offer a daily reprieve.

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought a lot of uncertainty and fear into our lives. Some of that fear and uncertainty can be caused by over thinking what is going on or unnecessarily worrying. So, I'm making sure I wash my hands frequently, not touching my face, staying away from social gatherings and all of the recommended guidelines to help avoid getting or spreading COVID-19 but it can be a little boring. I try to not watch news all day long while I'm in this self imposed captivity. I like to take pictures of birds and other creatures from my window as a welcome break.

I invite you to join me in sharing pictures, favorite poems, sayings, mottos, funny moments. Let's take a daily break together.

@johnbishop

This little guy was hugging my window yesterday and it took me a few minutes to recognize it – Mayfly. When I first moved to Minnesota I remember seeing them cover a bridge along the Mississippi River and they had to use snowplows to clear the bridge. Looks like it's coming into prime time for them now — They're coming: Mayfly hatch expected along Mississippi River soon — https://bringmethenews.com/minnesota-lifestyle/theyre-coming-mayfly-hatch-expected-along-mississippi-river-soon

@johnbishop those are different .Never heard of them but in Pa if a crab would live in water it was fresh drinking water .Up at our camp we had a block container that captured the brook water on our property and had a crab in it . That was the best drinking water , I would bottle it and bring it home with us.

@lioness, Never lived near a large body of water so fresh crabs mostly available whenever I traveled to other parts of the country. Interesting to hear about them and the good drinking water. Amazing what all we learn by sharing in these forums! Smiles

Thanks. Like I said, I'm not a recipe-sharer, but these have been something different and really awesome tasting. I originally put one together at Subway, just looking at what was in the case and having them add it. I was impressed with the combination and taste, so I've been "developing" and "tweaking" it. The Greek bread was the latest addition and it really punched it to a whole new level.

A local restaurant used to make a custom burger that had sliced avocado on it. It cost almost $10, but was actually worth it. I have never messed with fresh avocado, but I'm thinking I'm going to try something like that. I've been experimenting with veggie-burgers and Morningstar makes a grilling 'burger' that really does taste like meat. They seem to upset my stomach if I eat more than one, so maybe that is a good thing, as it will keep me from over-eating, lol.

@zeiracorp, Avocados are a passion and I have to really be careful because I can eat a whole one at one sitting if not careful but not good for my poor kidney function. Your photo is purely tantalizing !! Oh, yum!

I'll bet I could eat a whole one too. The only place I've ever had slices of a fresh one was on the burger I got at a restaurant a few years ago and it was really good. Thanks, & glad the photo made you hungry. I've been lovin' those sandwiches for a while. The Greek bread took it to a whole higher level. I'm not a pig-out person, but I don't like bad food. I like my food to be good and enjoyable. Simple is fine as long as it's good. Being type 2 with all sorts of metabolic problems including having to limit salt severely makes it very hard to find things it's ok to eat. I didn't know avocado affected kidney function. I'll keep that in mind because I take a couple handfuls of pills morning and evening, most of which can't be really good for the kidneys, or liver. It all comes with a price.

I will miss this thread. I've enjoyed sharing images with you all and enjoyed seeing your submissions.

I have one for you all I'll file as "off-the-wall," or maybe "just for fun."

I visit thrift shops a lot and collect some strange things. I often find office-grade staplers for a couple bucks. Since these are useful and cost a BUNCH more new (and maybe since, over the years, I could never find one when I needed one), I can't resist them. So I have sort of a stapler collection (c'mon, people collect weirder things, lol).

Well, everyone's seen/heard-of the infamous "Red Swingline" from the movie Office Space, right?.
https://www.cbr.com/office-space-red-stapler-milton-swingline/
https://www.amazon.com/s?k=red+swingline&ref=nb_sb_noss_2
I always thought that was kinda cool, and it was very cool that the movie induced Swingline to actuaually make red staplers (or so the story goes). One of my bosses actually has one on her desk (which I guess is supposed to warn us that she might just be a little crazy?).

So, as a photographer and arty-person, I get visual ideas sometimes. I got this idea, "Wouldn't it be cool to make a BLUE Swingline?"

So, a can of Rustoleum, some tape, some time, and voila – the BLUE Swingline.

Hope you like it. I think it looks cool as heck. (I paid $1.99 for the stapler – all it needed was cleaned and a jam cleared out of it where some dumb-ass smacked it – never smack a stapler)
–EDIT Note: After the fact I looked this up and they actually do make a blue one (darker than mine). The 747 Classic Desktop Stapler, 20 Sheet Capacity, Metal, Royal Blue (74724) $15.33 LOL 🙂

I'm not much on sharing recipes, but I just had to share this.

Made some photos of a breakfast sandwich recipe I came up with (sorry the insert is out of focus – couldn't re-do it, already ate it 🙂 )
These are just cell-phone photos.

Kontos 7" Gyro Bread- pre-oiled
Bacon
Eggs
Cheese
Guacamole
Ripe olives
Tomato slices
Salt & pepper
Spinach leaves (optional)

These sandwiches have been the highlight of my day for the past week! It all started when Giant put guacamole on sale for $2.50 a tub.  I love the stuff and it's good for you. You can put these together at Subway, but homemade is the best by far. (Subway is kinda fun because the server always looks at me funny when the unusual ingredients go on).

I make the rounds at all my favorite thrift shops frequently. I am also sucked-in if I drive past yard sales, LOL.
