Vestibular migraine: What symptoms do you experience?

Posted by klhe @klhe, Aug 12, 2018

good day members,

Johns Hopkins diagnosed me with vestibular migraine a little over one year ago. Prior to that no one knew what I had and I saw ENTs, neurologists, and many other Dr.s. MRI of close to two years ago shows all is normal. However, despite a respite of feeling almost normal for three months while taking a new medication (Effexor extended release at 75mg.) all of my symptoms came back full force for what I call episodes, at least once a week, and lasting up to three 3 days in bed. My symptoms for the last two years have been: popping ears, nausea, vertigo at the beginning which seems to have gone away and been replaced by dizziness and light headedness, tingling all over head, severe headaches, weakness to almost numbness in my arms, and severe fatigue. I can feel like a pressure in my head at times. I have not lost cognitive functions: that only occurred when I took Topiamate. My internist wants me to see a specialist at the Mayo Clinic, but I wonder if anyone else has experienced what my Hopkins Dr. calls very atypical VM symptoms?

I was wondering that! Glad I can wear at work if I need to. I ordered the plugs this morning. I'll do ANYTHING to get my life back. So, I put them in on the onset of my ears ringing? That happens every day sometimes all day sometimes just a few. I cannot wait to try them. Do I have to remove them slowly as to not blow my mind! haha
Thanks so much frobvt.

Okay cmg,

I hear you, I understand your frustration well! Yes, if your ears are ringing, that means the barometric pressure is shifting.

At that time, check the WeatherX app on your phone, to see what's changing. It will make a suggestion that you might need to put your plugs in.

Remember, I mentioned that this app will warn you when things are going to change, and it will suggest whether or not you should put them in. You will be entering your ZIP code where you live, in order to get that info. You will also be able to adjust your level of sensitivity. So I would start out and keep it at the lowest setting like I do (0.03), because I'm very sensitive to barometric pressure changes, however slight.

Why don't you go to the weatherx.com website and read all you can about it? Also, I noticed that the app is going to have something new, which I think is awesome. Coming soon, we will be able to track our migraines! And, the app is free.

Ha ha, you're not going to blow your mind, and you're not going to go zooming around the room if you take them out quickly!

Fingers crossed and prayers, hopefully this is going to help you like it has me!

And, your entirely welcome! Please keep me posted.

Good Evening,
I first would to say thank you for your post.
I am a person who suffers migraines and please: Definitely schedule too see your physician. Im not in medical field, I can relay though that in my experience's with concurring migraines past and present that my Doctor had suggested to try once a month self injection called Aimovig and it seems that this medication has been very beneficial in reducing my migraines. It has not removed them completely but many of my symptoms seems like they not overpowering as in the past.
I hope all is well and that your concerns will be addressed.

So...I got the ear plugs. The phone has been telling me to wear them every day now. I got a size regular but they keep popping out, so I am going to order another pair in size small. Will keep you posted. Thanks for all your help.

I have not figured out how to set them. You mentioned that you keep them on a low setting. I don't see where I have that option.

Hi cmg,

The app on the phone will be pretty active, with several alerts, as the barometric pressure changes a lot.

So sorry the regular ones aren't fitting properly! Hoping the size small will fit better!

You don't set them, I was talking about the WeatherX app, to 0.03.

That is the lowest setting which signals a change in the barometric pressure either rising, or falling. You can call the company directly, and they will help you out quite a bit too.

Cmg,

When you open the app, at the very top left hand corner, you will see where it says to set the threshold. Tap that, and there's like a little dial where you can select the reading.

Hi frobvt

Just wondering... I have been doing better on the medication and supplements suggested. However, I can have 5 great days, then wake up completely dizzy with that floating experience. I have always exercised and now wondering if that could be a trigger. Do you experience that after exercise as well?
