Very frequent heartburn post covid

Posted by morningrobin @morningrobin, Aug 14, 2022

I had covid in late January and starting inFebruary I had very unusual frequent heartburn and intestinal cramping. Nexium for two months did not help and the liquid antacid caused other problems. Two weeks of IBD antibiotic Xifanax followed by famotidine (Pepcid) twice a day has greatly reduced the heartburn that woke me up in the middle of the night.

For my post Covid heartburn, I took the approach of healing my stomach lining that the virus had damaged, using natural products. I put straight aloe vera juice into my water, took a supplement called “Aloe 10,000 & Soothing Herbs”, by NOW, and chewed DGL tablets after meals. I also am taking a powder called GI Restore. These got rid of it pretty quickly.

DGL is short for "deglycyrrhizinated licorice root extract". I like the chewable tablets, as it soothes the stomach. Also comes in capsules. A popular brand that is sweetened with stevia (no sugar) is Natural Factors.
Good luck!

What dr recommended this. I am getting over covid but notice worse heartburn than my normal just days after treatment and nausea so discouraging. I'm so upset about getting covid my tmjd is through the roof with severe ear and headache..I may ask my gi who I cant stand- real jerk about this antibiotic you use. I csnt take any ppis as I lost 10 lbs and it gave me sibo. I was on my way to gaining wt then got sick. I did see a gi at mayo a year ago. So could ask for advice..or go to a naturopath integrative med. Thanks for sharing

I do this every day until symptoms are gone for a week or so. I want to make sure the tissues are healed. Then a few times a week or as needed.

Before trying any medication, even OTC antacids, I spent six weeks taking aloe juice, drinking cold green tea, elevating the bed with 3 inch blocks then sleeping sitting up with a wedge pillow, eliminating anything in my diet that relates to heartburn, i.e. no alcohol, no coffee, no carbonated drinks, no chewing gum, no chocolate, no mint, no salads, no nightshades, no eating or drinking anything after a light supper. Nothing helped.

Try famotidine, a brand name is Pepcid. It is not a PPI and early research shows it helps with post Covid. Two months of Nexium, a PPI did nothing for me.
