UTI - No Symptoms

Posted by Jefesitachica @npolanco, Aug 3, 2023

I am at the point that I dread the results of urinalysis test. UTI has been showing for the last 5 years. I have never had
any symptoms. Antibiotics have been prescribed the last one was Nitrofurantoin and still the test were positive. The Dr will not prescribe anymore antibiotics. I have tried mega dose of vitamin C cranberry juice and pills, D-Mannose, apple cider vinegar all to no avail. I am 78 years old and at this stage of my life just give up. If anyone is dealing with the same issue sure would appreciate your comments.

I can see how that would be very discouraging. What does your doctor say about it?

Spoke to my PCP yesterday said she will consult with other Dr in the group and call me to discuss further .
So I’ll see what happens - trying to take it one day at a time

Frequent UTI's and will see a urologist next month.
Any advice or important questions I should ask??

@npolanco

I turned 72 a few days ago.
All the following happened in my hometown and not at the Mayo Clinic.

A month ago or so I had a UTI, but I did not know it. I knew something was going on. I had no fever, no urgency or burning. My actual stomach was hurting like I had an ulcer. I had started a new medicine and chalked that up to the new medicine. Which my doctor says could also be .. at least partially .. from the UTI. A couple of weeks after the stomach pain I started just feeling unwell. I felt like something was crawling in my chest and stomach. I felt pressure in those placed too. My mind did not seem right .. I had an uneasy feeling and confused .. somewhat like anxiety, but not quite that. It is just hard to describe. I had a fast heart rate.

I already had an appointment with my doctor the next day .. a Monday. He did an ecg in exam room and it was good. I had a chest x-ray, blood drawn, and urine was given. It takes a week to get the results back. He ordered a CT scan of chest/pelvis. The soonest the appointment for the CT scan they had was 3 weeks away.

By Sunday .. my chest and stomach pain increased and the crazy brain was getting worse. .. I was confused more than I usually am. At 8 am that day I went to the emergency room. Since I had chest pain they assigned me a cardiologist. All test were repeated that my doctor had done and ordered. I had a CT scan of chest/pelvis. ( after 4 hours .. which is much shorter time than the usual 10-12 hours) The ER doctor said I was fine. .. to talk to my doctor about the CT scan. It only showed I have a small stricture where the esophagus meets the stomach. I knew I had that and will probably have my esophagus dilated in a couple of months. My results of test done at ER were on my hospital portal the following day .. Monday morning. Nothing really out of the ordinary .. except urinalysis said cloudy .. abnormal. I told my husband that means to me there is a UTI. Less than hour later my doctor's office called me and said: Ms Goff, you have a UTI and doctor J has ordered an antibiotic. She said it takes at least 48 hours to get the results back on the culture. When a flag goes up at my doctors office, the sample automatically is sent to be cultured. The ER did not send their sample for a culture. I finished my antibiotic and have one more day on the Sucralfate for my stomach. I am feeling so much better.

I am wondering if your sample was sent for culture. If not it could be the wrong antibiotic given.

Wishing you the best

Yes I do wonder if they are taking cultures. I am lucky to get UTIs very rarely. I have one at present...it was asymptomatic and I was on holidays 5 times as far from home as possible and thought it was jet lag snd general change to routine thst I wasn't totally well....I got home after a month and got really sick with high temperatures and shivering. My doctor immediately suspected a UTI and dipped my urine sample and told me it was a serious UTI. Immediately put me on Macrodantin and sent sample for cultures which takes several days to culture. Returned after a few days and its improving but waiting for results. The previous time I had a symptomatic UTI and went to doctor who gave me prescription for penicillin which I didn't take I just drank plenty of fluids and it cleared up before the test results came back. Turned out I needed a very unusual antibiotic to be effective against that UTI ...so it cleared itself as it was caught early. I would have assumed it was the penicillin if I had taken it! So I think the best thing is to check your own urine samples if you suspect a UTI and that way go to doctor quickly and get the right antibiotics

Haven’t received the lab report for test done 7/23. On the 4/23 report, I see “Urine Culture Routine-final report - abnormal. « The Dr did not prescribe anymore medication She told me that sometimes UTI with no symptoms happen in the elderly as long as I don’t experience symptoms not to worry. I have new PCP waiting for her to get back to me

Remember to look for the oddball symptoms . I should have. When my mom lived with us she had none of the regular symptoms either .. more off mentally.. similar to anxiety, was irritable. I think there are many more that happen with the elderly. I need to look them up and keep bookmarked and read often.

Not good to take many antibiotics. Earlier this year I had sinus infection. So far that's all I've had to take antibiotics this year.

Have you tried a daily shot (two ounces) of aloe vera juice? So far so good with it. I got George’s Aloe Vera juice from Amazon at the suggestion of a friend and it seems to be working. Also soothes your stomach!

Thank you for your suggestion. I have many aloe plants . I’ve never juiced so thought I would try juicing but read not all aloe is the same. Am ordering George’s… it looks like there’s the drink and the supplement ? Which one do you take? More or less, when did you/ or your friend, start feeling results?

It’s so obvious. I have been looking at the “generic” symptoms. Your suggestion “remember to look for the oddball symptoms “ makes sense. I’m on the look out now
Thanks
