Use of Biotin
I am an 85-year-old male with alcohol-induced peripheral neuropathy, diagnosed 10 years ago. My symptoms are painless numbness in both feet initially but extending up both legs to mid-calf over the past two years. I have stopped alcohol use and take a super B vitamin along with 300 mg of stabilized R-lipoic acid (Biotin optimizer) daily, which seems to lessen the numbness intensity. I have read encouraging things about Biotin in this discussion group, and my physician approves trying it. It comes in 500, 1,000 and 10,000 mg doses. Should I start with 500 and for how long to experiment before increasing the dose?

In case anyone is interested in the 5000 mcg (or lower) - both Amazon and Vitamin Shoppe have this; there is a brand called Country Life which has high ratings and has the 5000 or 10000. I am a small person so like to go for the lower dosages especially to start out. Also Nature Made makes both a 2500 mcg and a 5000 mcg.
A thought re blood tests while on biotin... biotin can affect multiples types of blood tests and it is a good idea to either do a google search online for what tests it specifically affects or ask your doctor. HTH to everyone. Personally getting a hold of my neurologist is pretty tough, so I usually do the google search LOL
Oops! Three days into the trial, a 10 mg dose produced painful abdominal side effect so my little experiment stopped for a while. I will check in to start a 5 mg trial after February 22.
R- Lipoic Acid?? Why the R? I have only seen Lipoic acid. No R. Does it matter? And what brand would that be?
(From Google) R-Lipolic Acid (R-ALA) is a naturally occurring biologically active form of alpha-lipolic acid (ALA). At the same time, ALA is a mixture of both R- and S- forms, with R-LA being considered the more beneficial.
