Upper body exercises to move mucus
Can anyone give me some information on specific upper body exercises to do to help move mucus to the upper airways? I already walk 1-2 miles which does help, but on days when mucus is more than usual I would like to add some other methods to help. Or any and all ideas would be appreciated. I believe my worst mucus accumulation is in my middle and lower lobes. I already do airway clearance x 2 daily sometimes 3. Thank you

Check out an exercise program called Gyrotonics developed by a ballet dancer. It works on the mechanics of the whole body working together properly and strengthening muscles that are often underused putting greater stress on other muscles I.e. like those in the neck and shoulders. The result is pain and tightness in those overworked muscles. It also works with fascia which is a big body connector. But the biggest benefit for me is learning how to breathe properly which involved teaching me to let my breath follow the motion
An indirect answer to your question. Dr. Addrizzo-Harris of NYU Langone on a webinar suggested the importance of upper body strength for lung clearance. Examples include: Bent Over Row, Chest Press, Biceps Curls, Triceps kickbacks (all upper body). I tried many of these exercises for a while on my own. After a lot of fits and starts, I decided to work with a trainer who could coach me on form and increasing weight. Best investment I have made in a long time! Great for bone health, strength and lung clearance muscles.
That sounds like just what I need scoop!! Unfortunately I live in an area where my nearest neighbor is 1000 ft down the road. And very hard to find a trainer. I’m more than willing to hire/work with one, I’ll admit I haven’t paid any attention to upper body strength training in months. Only walking. Any suggestions or websites you know of where I might be able to find some literature on upper body/chest exercises? Thank you.
The pandemic made virtual workouts possible. I know someone who still works out with his trainer who he met during covid. Several cameras set up so his form can be watched and corrected if necessary.
I believe @becleartoday suggested https://pulmonarywellness.org/rehab/ . I'm sure there are others but the person that runs that group appears to understand our population.
I began the online Boot Camp offered by Pulmonary Wellness Foundation about two weeks ago. It is a six-week program. I have never been much of a jock, but had been doing 25 minutes on my rebounder and 45 minutes of yoga per day. The Boot Camp offers a variety of exercises, excellent information about dealing with lung issues, and motivational food for thought. Dr. Noah Greenspan is definitely a free spirit. When I first went to the website I was taken aback by what seemed a wacky presentation to me. (I’m 80 years old), but as I read his articles and listened to him, I became very impressed by his knowledge and his deep understanding of what it is like for people dealing with lung diseases. The Boot Camp is actually fun as well as inspiring and empowering, especially for an exercise-adverse person such as myself. I love it. It’s definitely worth a try, and it is free.
Thank you, Bernadene! I am going to try the Boot Camp.
@bernadene24 Thanks for the info on the Boot Camp. Appreciated!
Kate
Thanks for the info about the boot camp. You are an inspiration- rebounder and yoga at 80 years young with this lung issue!
Years ago, before MAC, I started weight training in my home. Bought a weight bench, a bar bell and dumbbells, and a book, Weight Training for Dummies. It all worked wonderfully; I was in great shape and still occasionally go to the gym to use the weight machines. You can read and/or watch videos regarding the proper form, and if you don't live alone, have someone watch you to help you know what you're doing. https://www.amazon.com/Weight-Training-Dummies-LaReine-Chabut/dp/1118940741/ref=sr_1_1?adgrpid=1335907189337653&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.PNgO2LpCTiNMnvLg342sKr2o27gUJIDDUA9InLsTwJlMcjDvUD56Qwuwb52i6fEDNKsHwoyiSPUadf6tLLC5vdkz2T3bT3J1SxVGXy2Yf9TwwOobaVXLuMR-KBAE6bzcHPjnVUkxuDY83IwW_32nLlZPPnneHrjuDFOBOOn_ZcIdNA7aPyT7EQeWbA4Rlb_0yAQXphj7jveokQMmqHe7NbP7y4vhg7vWHHiq3NnmXLk.x2G0TXSO-UH5F1X0-NIwhWovMU5mF35tPlzwf7CCyJs&dib_tag=se&hvadid=83494439483346&hvbmt=be&hvdev=c&hvlocphy=95270&hvnetw=o&hvqmt=e&hvtargid=kwd-83494534244428%3Aloc-190&hydadcr=2766_13536477&keywords=weight+lifting+for+dummies&mcid=61b3af9b411938ee9bf54c6186d9abd3&qid=1752252881&sr=8-1
