Unusual Vomiting when I don't Expect it

Posted by phxbarb @phxbarb, Nov 28, 2025

I start out ok, doing a task, like raking leaves. Then suddenly I feel queasy, unwell and have to sit down. If I don't sit or lay down right away, I am in the kitchen vomiting in the sink. I have those little white pills ( O something) for nausea that can "catch" it sometimes. What is it?
I am older, age 83. Usually up and around and this limits me. Cannot go to Walmart and vomit there. Won't find a chair to sit in either.

@heisenberg34 Well, mine is apparently connected to being out of breath, doing a task that becomes too much for me, and nausea that overtakes me. It's never while I am peacefully sitting down, reading or relaxing. It's awful wretching, empties the whole stomach and I get weak and have to lay down. Not like your situation at all.

@nycmusic It could have something to do with a lung. I say this because when it happens, I am out of breath and feel exhausted, like I cannot get enough air. I mentioned it to a GI doctor once and he didn't say anything. He gave me large white pills to curb acid. (Carafate? I think).

@phxbarb have you been checked for hernia, gall-bladder, inflammation ? If not, get to a doc who will check you out and listen to you.

@nycmusic Oh sure. Where do I find a doc who will listen to me? Most give you 5 minutes to tell your story and then it's on to the next !

@phxbarb It is hard to find a good doc who listens, no question…but they do exist and the time searching is well rewarded….sometimes nurse practitioners are a very good start- they listen and can guide you, maybe lead you to needed specialists… I remember asking my internist to chose docs for my cancer team who would be real partners in health—ended up with an awesome all-woman team !

continue to get different advice from doctors............but below seem to make sense? i have a narrow small intestine following surgery.....resulting in chronic constipation / hard stool
if constipation caused by medication or narrow small intestine?

Medications i should not take / Talk to your health care team first.
DO NOT use liquid laxatives that have mineral oil or magnesium in them. Brands such as Magnolax®, Agarol®, or Milk of Magnesia® may not be safe to use.

DO NOT take bulk-forming laxatives like Metamucil® or Prodiem®. These are forms of fibre, which do not work for medication-related constipation. They will make bowel movements very hard if you do not drink enough fluids.

DO NOT take a suppository or use an enema before speaking with your health care team if you think your white blood cell or platelet counts might be low. Some cancer treatments increase your risk of having low white blood cells or low platelets. White blood cells help fight infection. Platelets help your body to stop bleeding.

DO NOT take Docusate (example: “Colace”). This is a stool softener. It does not help opioid-related constipation and we do not recommend that you take this.

Hi @peterose - Wondering if you are quoting a specific source about the laxatives, stool softeners and suppositories? If so, would you mind providing a link?

@peterose Did you mean one angry old gut? I am at the same level you are. But don't let it go without the once a week or so clearing everything out. I was out of town, never good for constipation and I just let it go. Then came home and was totally immovable for a couple days. Dulcolax works for me, thank goodness. Not pleasant but it works. The GI doc recommended it.
