Untreated Asthma...More Mucus & Effects on Airways
Typing on my phone, so I hope you will forgive me for including a fairly lengthy extract from a letter I just put together for my Dr. Would dearly love your input. Many thanks.
"I have had chronic allergy/asthma reactions since reaching the Qld coast...I think the Universe is trying to tell me something!
The first event occurred around Tully camped beside a sugar cane mill...they burn off the sugar residues overnight! The severe shortness of breath went on intermittently down the coast and has been the scariest times of my life.
It seems high humidity, low cloud cover, potentially pollen/grass seed/wet/mould/animal dander/and who knows what else are all interfering now. I just did a week's housesit where it all became very acute and i believe i was at death's door...I ended up trying to sleep in my car in order to get out of the house. Went to local hospital on weekend and they did blood tests and chest xray - all clear and my oxygen was 99/100 probably because of all the nebbing and puffers i had used. However anxiety through the roof and blood pressure 165 over 80...normally it is 135 over 80. I have finished housesit and moved to a friend's where tonight I couldn't sleep in the bed ?dust?.
During this period I have been taking 2 puffs Symbicort twice day, hospital put me on 3 days Prednisone (just finished), Ventolin as needed. The tight band I felt over my chest preventing breathing in the housesit only eased when I took a Phenergen to get some sleep on my last night...so an antihistamine addressed that.
I noticed in the hospital that, after taking around 8 puffs of Ventolin the previous night, when asked about coughing I realised I hadn't been coughing at all that day and didn't have excess mucus at all. Which leads me to wonder whether the specialists have had it right all along...that the excess mucus I produce, 7oz each time I nebulise, and more with interim lung clearing, IS RELATED to untreated asthma that I am unaware of at home.
I have for years been trying to establish whether if I am not taking treatment for my unfelt asthma is that having an effect on my Bronchiestases/general lung condition. You know that I hadn't felt any noticeable difference was being made with my using Symbicort. Could the Ventolin be treating my airways in a way the Symbicort doesn't, since the use of the Ventolin the night before hospital cut all my mucus production in its tracks?
Also, I found the following information this morning which bothers me and I think this may be happening to me (thickening of airways, enlargement of mucus glands). It would explain my continuing and increasing mucus production and may be being caused by my not treating my (however unfelt) asthma symptoms. What do you think?
Another concern I have is whether I might become locked in to this type of ongoing chain reaction even after I remove myself from these triggers back to the West, now that it has been kicked off. Do you have any Intel on the possibility of that?
This is an excerpt from the article on the internet below:
How a flare-up can become ongoing:
Persistent Inflammation:
Triggers, like allergens, cause the airways to become inflamed, swell, and produce excess mucus.
Chronic Inflammation:
Repeated exposure to these triggers can turn the inflammation into a persistent, chronic condition, leading to ongoing damage.
Airway Remodeling:
Over time, chronic inflammation can cause structural changes in the airways, such as thickening of the airway walls and enlargement of mucous glands, further narrowing the airways."
