Undecided choice of drugs for Osteoporosis

Posted by peace44 @peace44, Oct 10, 2023

I am 80 years old women and have borderline osteoporosis which affects my entire body. My doctor wants me to take Prolia and the Rheumatologist wants me to take Reclast. I’m unhappy with both choices as the side effects are great and I do not tolerate new drugs well. I am very undecided and am considering doing not taking annty drugs for this condition. I have never had a fracture and I’m very active Any opinions or advice.

When my 9 year old grandson - a fitness fiend- heard I was doing squats with 24K kettlebells, he said he hoped my physio knew what she was doing. Indeed. Forget now what weights I started with. But it has to be a gradual build up under careful supervision. In the summer heat and humidity here, I've also had to watch out for heat stroke - with all the huff and puff!

janfluke,
I will get my first Reclast infusion in May.
Nervous, but I’ve been lucky so far with radical drugs. 🙂

Will you please let me know how you are doing after your Reclast infusion?🙏

janflute,
Absolutely I will. I have reported my Evenity journey on here and will report on Reclast, too.
I should say that I also was on Forteo for five months and later, Tymlos for a period of about five months. Tolerated both of those well.

@windyshores

@freckle1 1 are you on Reclast or Prolia or nothing for bones?

Without bone meds I lost 10% bone density the first year on letrozole.

I had a Reclast infusion February 2023. It laid me out for about 7 months and I am still having side effects. The first 3 weeks were a nightmare with horrible bone pain everywhere in my body. So painful I could not sleep. After the bone pain started subsiding the other side affects remained (tired, couldn't sleep, swelling in hands and feet, muscle spasms, chills, rash(small clustered blisters) and the first week after the infusion I gained 10 lbs. I will NEVER have Reclast again. I was on Prolia for several years before Reclast-just had a constant headache with that one. I don't think my body will every feel the same again due to Reclast.

So very, very sorry to hear this. I hope that you will feel better at some point. Thank you for posting this. I am not sure that I am willing to take a chance on having the infusion and experiencing a severe reaction to Reclast as so many have.

I am going to have a 20% dose, slow infusion and IV hydration.

windyshores,
The infusion center agreed to the 20% dose?
I am having a Reclast infusion in June. Worried.

@susanfalcon52 yay. If they are not doing IV hydration, hydrate well and take tylenol the day before, day of and day after. So glad for you that you can do the lower dose, at least to start. We will do that more frequently if we continue but I think that feels better than all at once!

See my write up below on my Reclast experience-really bad. I am 76 and I feel like I will never be the same.
