Umbilical hernia repair: laparoscopic or open repair?

Hello!

I’ve had 24/7 abdominal pain with tenderness around the belly button with GI issues for four years now. Apparently I have a 2.4 cm fat containing umbilical hernia that is incarcerated. Which repairing method is suitable and has a less chance of developing neuropathy after surgery and abdominal adhesions? Laparoscopic without mesh or open repair without mesh? I would appreciate your insight guys. Thank you.

I had open repair for my umbilical hernia about 3 weeks ago. No mesh was used. Dissolvable stitches were used internally, and glue was used for external incision site around belly button. I’ve had no issues during or post surgery so I am pleased with the outcome so far. I started walking the day after surgery for exercise, but I haven’t done any other exercise or heavy lifting. I am going for a follow up visit in 2 weeks.

@drrps3 I had a 3 1/2 para esophageal hernia and really no pain but eating has been a challenge. They wrap upper stomach to lower esophageal and the bloating is terrible as I am a petite woman and never had protruding abdomen. The surgery was and I recovered quickly except for eating.
