Umbilical hernia repair: laparoscopic or open repair?
Hello!
I’ve had 24/7 abdominal pain with tenderness around the belly button with GI issues for four years now. Apparently I have a 2.4 cm fat containing umbilical hernia that is incarcerated. Which repairing method is suitable and has a less chance of developing neuropathy after surgery and abdominal adhesions? Laparoscopic without mesh or open repair without mesh? I would appreciate your insight guys. Thank you.

Hello @invisiblepain2, I've had the open repair surgery for a bi-lateral inguinal hernia but I already have neuropathy and laparoscopic wasn't an option for me. I did find a small 2003 study that indicated laparoscopic had less complications.
"Conclusions:
LR results in faster RTNA, and lower complication and recurrence rates compared with those in ORWM. Patients with larger hernias and previous repairs benefit from LR."

Thank you so much for your response. Does this also apply to umbilical hernia? Like the chances of neuropathy with open repair? How painful was your recovery?

1 Reaction@invisiblepain2 my recovery was fairly good. The only thing I still struggle with is chronic constipation that I think has something to do with the surgery but not really sure.
This is bad because I also have IBS with constipation. Does laparoscopy cause constipation too? How long did you have pain after the open repair? Any adhesions? How bad is your neuropathy?

May I know what kind of hernia you have? Do you have any pain? Where?
I've had laparoscopic umbilical hernia repair without mesh and it has healed well with no negative side effects.

It's in of all places right where my belly button should be. A big squishy bubble about an inch and a half in diameter. You can push it in and it pops back out. No pain.

May I know what kind of umbilical hernia you had? Did you have abdominal pain like 24/7?

Well neuropathy is painful. I have no bulging but severe abdominal pain. What kind of sutures did they use? Was it absorbable?
