Typical Carcinoid Tumor in Lungs

Posted by dzerfas @dzerfas, Jan 17, 2017

I was diagnosed in April 2016 with a Typical Carcinoid Tumor in my right lower lobe, approx. 3 cms. It has remained stable, per most recent CT scan in Dec. I have no symptoms. I am curious if others have been in this situation and if you opted to "watch and wait" or have surgery right away - mine would be a lobectomy of the right lower lobe. Can Typical Carcinoids become Atypical? Blessings to all on this journey!

Hello, Teresa, how are you?
In answer to your question, no I had no symptoms of anything at all - no coughs, tight chest, shortness of breath - we were regular gym goers in those days and I had no problem with our routines at all and also walked several times a day - and no neuroendocrine symptoms either. So I have no idea how long it would have taken to be detected had we not been given a free chiropractic consultation at a health exhibition and this particular chiropractor liked every new patient to have a full spine - top to bottom - Xray. It was a large almost completely circular mass 3 x 5 x 3 in my right lower lobe. It caused a bit of head scratching as apparently they are quite uncommon - down here at least!

@pekoe01 no problem, glad my experience helped you. The hospital sent me home with oxy, and it didn’t help. I think maybe I took one pill and it just made me spacey, but didn’t take away the pain and discomfort. When I told my doctor he ordered gabapentin, I did take that for about five days but Stopped because it wasn’t really helping the thing that helped the most was the Tylenol and Advil, but ultimately, a little exercise in the form of light walking, and time, was really all that helped it. I could do just about anything after three or four months, but it really took about six months for me to realize I didn’t hurt anymore, just MINOR inconveniences that were easier to deal with. Be patient, healing will come. Best wishes.!

@jhhaas Thank you for your encouragement. I experimented with my foot compound which contains gabapentin and lidocaine today. I am not able to take gabapentin due to having afib, so I though it wouldn't hurt to apply the foot compound to my waist and abdomen. I had no sharp nerve pains today! I will continue using it and hope it keeps the nerve pain at bay.

Good morning
3 years ago I had an Adenocarcinoma tumor removed from my right upper lobe. At that time I had a small spot removed from my lower right lobe. It was a typical carcinoid tumor. I was ranked as stage 1 A. Every 6 months I have a cat scan to check on a couple of other small lung carcinoids. In 3 years they have not grown. Carcinoids grow very slowly - I am hoping for no growth! If they show growth I will find a carcinoid lung doctor - probably in Boston
Good luck and keep us posted
