Tymlos side effects

Posted by loh @loh, Jan 29 8:25am

Has anyone else had leg/back aches with Tymlos? I've been on it since October and lately I've had terrible aches in my legs and lower back, especially at night. Is that one of the known side effects? Thanks!

I had terrible body aches everywhere after using only one or two clicks of Tymlos for a couple weeks...I had to stop...the aches continued another two weeks after stopping. It was so miserable I could hardly function.

I don’t know if this will help you or not but if you are not already…
1) Be sure to hydrate throughout the day with fluids (not water it flushes out electrolytes from your system) Try a half cup of prune juice, standard green Gatorade 50/50 water not too sweet.
2) If you drink coffee or something you can add a little to and you don’t have a sodium problem add a 1/8th teaspoon (very small amount of table salt) to it.
3) Take a couple ibuprofen with food like an English muffin with milk, non fat if you can ( calcium) if your doctor says it’s okay…it helps constrict (vasoconstrict a little)
4) Make sure you are getting recommended amount of calcium and d3 you need. Everyone is slightly different. But some say don’t load up on supplements just before bed …take through the day spread around.
5) have your blood checks for markers that can cause headaches…talk to your doctor…
I tried this and it worked for me…

I tried Tymlos (starting in July 2025) but consistently had headaches and my heart rate went up to 90-over 100 BPM for at least 1-1/2 hours after taking the medicine. I’d still wake up with the headaches as well. I went down to 2 clicks to see if the side effects would subside but they didn’t.
I ended up stopping Tymlos after 5 weeks of the consistent headaches and elevated heart rate. I am 66 years old and have severe osteoporosis in my spine but the side effects were too severe.
I changed over to Evenity and have had 2 months of shots already with no side effects. So far I am much happier with Evenity.

@kima12 glad envenity is working for you. I had terrible side effects and they hit me around the 4th month. I stuck with it but it did nothing but decrease my numbers.

I found I had side effects/pain in body parts that were previously compromised from injuries. I was a marathon runner, ice skater and rode horses (I was thrown more than once from horseback, took some major falls on the ice, and fell several times running, injuring my knee). All of the body parts that were previously injured years ago woke up and complained after I started Tymlos. The headaches were short lived, but the aching legs and hands have been ongoing. My damaged knee throbbed during the night. Recently the stomach upset began. Of course, that's because I have chronic pancreatitis. I just stopped the meds for several days (was on it since Sept. 27) and the symptoms abated. But with osteoporosis, meds are needed, despite my years of athletic undertaking -- now no longer in the last 10 years. I am 76 years of age. I think the side effects come and go.

@willowmena - I am also 76. It’s like we are in a catch22 - I also have pain off and on with any of my broken bones area plus back pain (from 2 surgeries). My nausea has subsided but headache is still there after the injection. Some nights bad and some nights very minimal. I’m continuing for now.
Thxs.

@osteopatient2026 Prolia does not build bone, it only prevents further bone loss. I would avoid it. It can also make you lose bone faster when you stop it.

I don’t know how sound this info is but it’s from drugs dot com
“Prolia (denosumab) helps build bone by increasing “bone mass” and reducing the risk of fractures in individuals with osteoporosis. It works by blocking a protein that leads to bone breakdown, making bones stronger.” I know it’s not an anabolic but it works differently…
My understanding is that Forteo, Tymlos (parapeptides) and Evenity are the bone builders. I’m not sure how Prolia works exactly I think it’s a monoclonal. RANK ligand (RANKL) inhibitor FDA approved for treating:
Osteoporosis in postmenopausal women who are at a high risk of fracture.

@osteopatient2026 Prolia suppresses the bone-breakdown cells (osteoclasts). If Prolia is stopped, those osteoclasts return with a vengeance: the “rebound effect”. You can lose all your bone density gains, and even end up worse than you were before.

The anabolics like Tymlos, Forteo, and Evenity work on the other side of the equation: they stimulate the bone-building cells (osteoblasts.) You still need to follow up with a biphosphonate, but the potential loss of density without a follow-up is not as severe as with Prolia.

Thank you posting that. What are your T Scores? I’m sort of in the same situation. I had one morning with no headache but after 4 days on Tymlos it’s back this morning. I know it can be a side effect up to several weeks but for most “I’ve read” the side effects should subside.
I went on Tymlos because I might need a tooth extracted and implant.
Prolia was the other drug recommended but it doesn’t build bone as fast but some studies show it continues building bone over time (years)

My T-scores:
Spine is -3.9,
Neck: -2.4
Hip: -2.2
I hope your headaches improve. I couldn’t deal with those after 5 weeks with the elevated heart rate and I did stay well hydrated.
I am hoping that with Evenity my T-scores improve but we will see.

That’s what I was told too. Having problem with Tymlos pre authorization from doctors staff. The insurance said they have sent several requests and not received a response…we went to the doctors office directly instead of calling and played the recording of the insurance rep saying we requested PA but have received anything from your doctor so you were denied. The doctors staff says they sent in the PA.
So the diisays you could always go on Prolia instead it’s authorized under part b. Makes no sense not to use a bone builder first. Exasperated…

@osteopatient2026 I had a similar problem, and it was as simple as the doctor not having the correct fax number. Call the insurer and have them confirm the correct fax number and even the "attention to" name, then check with your doctor. Also, in my case, there was a different fax number for anything related to Medicare authorizations.

Drove to hospital again and the doctor office said they resubmitted it…I hope they are not just doing the same thing expecting a different result.
