Tymlos Cartridge (Extra Med Amount)
In case anyone was wondering how much "extra" medication is included in the pre-filled Tymlos pens beyond the 1-dose for priming and the advertised 30 doses for daily injections, I was told by a Tymlos rep (who was communicating with the Tymlos Quality Control Dept) that each pen contains SEVEN doses beyond the 30 that the pen is intended to deliver. One of those 7 would be used to prime the pen, thus there are 6 "extra doses." (Please remember the manufacturer states that the pen should be thrown away 30 days after its first use, as the medication may not remain stable and the ingredients can start to degrade. I'm simply sharing this as it may be reassuring to know there are additional doses in each pen in case you have a mishap anytime during your 30 days (i.e. need to repeat the priming process, unintentionally misfire a dose, load the wrong amount, etc).

Yes. After 30 days, you can clearly see that there is still some liquid left in the pen for additional doses. If you use it on day 31 or 32, I wouldn't be concerned. I know there are some people who keep the pen refrigerated the whole time so that they can milk every last dose out of it, but apart from the preservative, it's not clear to me that the active medication itself doesn't start to degrade after 30 days. I just stuck to a 30-day schedule for simplicity.

2 Reactions@njx58 I also discard my pen after 30 days, regardless of the amount of medication still in the cartridge. I have fought side effects from day one and had to reduce my dose. I am currently trying to titrate back up to a full dose, so I'm discarding a whole lot of medicine every 30 days.....but I don't dare flirt with the degrading of any medication on top of my side effects.
