Tymlos - can you stop it suddenly?
I had huge improvement on DEXA scan after 9 months of Tymlos. I was thinking about quitting it because of side effects but the improvment made me think it was worth continuing. The symptoms of hypercalcimia were getting very uncomfortable.
I saw the endocrinologist, who told me to talk to my doc about taking a different blood pressure medication to reduce the hypercalcemia - but I can't get in for an enitre month. So I stopped taking Tymlos 5 days ago mostly due to exreme leg cramps but I feel SO.MUCH.BETTER that I"m thinking I should just quit.
However, my physical and mental energy levels are now so low that I can barely function. I would think that I am depressed, but it's not like I don't care about anything - it's that there's nothing worth caring about. So this isn't good. But what do I do? I read that stopping Tymlos without a back up plan is bad for you, my physical body feels tons better, and some aspect of my mental body is draining faster than a cell phone searching for a signal.
Both the endocrinologist and my primary care doc are unavailable, and there's not point in going to an urgent care because they'll just tell me make an appt with primary care. But something is really not right. Any thoughts on how to move forward?

Were your leg cramps only in the early morning 3-4 am?
@dorob
How often were you getting blood tests for monitoring calcium etc?
@rosemaryrocks
Except for me my tscore of -4.8 spine reclast would not do much if anything…I need a bone building med…forteo, Tymlos or Evenity are currently the only meds that work.
@osteopatient2026
I have only been on Tymlos for just over 2 months. I had a baseline in July and it looks like the NP tests it every 6 months. I’m not sure that it often enuf given the tenuous nature of calcium and how it can change up and down
@rosemaryrocks
I am so glad you are in the right track. I know it is difficult to be your own advocate when things are spiraling downhill and often we don’t feel we can control when we can be seen (or heard) by medical folks.
Now that you are off Tymlos, are you going to support the bone-building it has done with another maintenance drug like Reclast?

2 Reactions@osteopatient2026 The 6-8 month point is where my bone markers showed my peak response to Tymlos and that is when I felt the worst!! Are you watching your Vit D too? I noticed that for me if it got too low like 25-35ng/Ml (Vit D, 25-OH) I got shin and wrist pain. If it got too high (above 60ng/Ml) it threw me into hypercalcemia (Vit D was 73 and calcium jumped to 9.8mg/dL) and I got confused, fatigued, and had terrible random bone pain. My Endo said he likes to see Vit D at about 40. Personally I feel best around 40-50 for Vit D and within a tight range either side of 9 for serum calcium. I think it might be worth tracking by journaling how you feel and checking these and adjusting accordingly. Just a suggestion... I think it's crazy they don't mandate checking Vit and D and calcium regularly during this therapy because it is so crucial to the compliance of patients (that is, so many drop out because of these effects) and ultimately to the success of this medicine!

Thx for the info
My 25-hydroxy vitamin D level is 66 ng/mL
He said it was fine?
My Calcium was 9.6 - it’s been at that or around that for years.
Appreciating your input.
@osteopatient2026 Mostly, yes. And they hurt so bad that I made groaning noises, which is saying a lot. Also, my wierd send of humor sometimes giggles at what the neighbors might have heard.
@osteopatient2026 My vit D levels dropped a lot on Tymlos even though normally I have to take supplements to keep it high enough. From what I've read, Tymlos can do that.
I'm not a doc, but from what I know, those are good numbers.
Someone mentioned magnesium glycinate. That was the first supplement I dropped because I read that it too, can cause muscle cramps. When I first started Tymlos, this moved relieved the cramps.
It was toward though, that things became difficult agian. My body seems to have said "mission accomplished and we don't Tymlos anymore."

3 Reactions@dorob Yes - I had a Reclast infusion about 7 weeks after stopping Tymlos. As mentioned somewhere else, the doc was aware by now that I can be unusually senstive to medications. I'm happy to report that she extended the duration of the infusion and added an IV of saline solution. I'm even happier to report that I had no side affects.
