Trying to solve mystery of recurrent nausea.

Posted by bg7771 @bg7771, Apr 26 12:23pm

First occurrence was about 5 years ago. I had nausea for several weeks and treated it with Pepcid AC. Now I am several weeks into a second (vomited once) episode and was prescribed pantoprazole 40 mg, 1 tablet daily, and have had improvement but still feel nausea at times. Blood tests have revealed elevated amylase, both 5 years ago and again now although it is not as severe, 237 as opposed to 380. Five years ago my PCP had fractionated testing done and the elevated amylase was coming from both my pancreas and my saliva glands in fairly equal amounts. My PCP never pursued it further nor did I request him to since it went away. I am 82 years old (female) and frequently feel tired but try to be as active as possible. Not sure what is going on but I am scheduled for a CT of my abdomen in about 3 weeks and am terrified of what the results may show [pancreatic cancer]?. I have been in pretty good health otherwise. Thank you for any information about anyone's experience with elevated amylase.

I wish you the best and With your upcoming appointment.
It’s the pits to get old because our bodies are changing and things that we used to be able to do or eat our body no longer tolerate. My body is no longer like him..
Have you changed socks? What about shoes? Do you use any lotion, creams or powder on your hands and feet? It could be some kind of chemical in them if you do. Do you have allergies or sensitivities to foods and chemicals?
Wish you the very best

Thank you so much for your kind words!

I do not have any insight for you, but have found Dramamine with ginger very effective for the nausea I have been experiencing.

I appreciate your suggestion - thank you! Will try it.

I know the feeling of continued nausea- I have dealt with same for a while now.
I’m your age but I have had other GI problems for years. The nausea is more recent.
I have had numerous tests- endoscopy, CT scans and gastric emptying tests. However, my amylase has remained normal.
One cause of nausea has been due to bile duct having “ sludge” or tiny stones.
Have you had tests of gallbladder function?
The bile duct and pancreatic duct enter the small intestine together. If there is some bile duct content that can block the opening, the amylase can increase because the pancreatic secretions can’t move.
A gastric emptying study shows how fast the stomach processes the food. My last test was normal but it’s probably slow enough to make me feel full and nauseous according to my doctor.
Try to find a good gastroenterologist- preferably at a large university medical center.
Some years ago I went to Mayo with other GI issues. I now have a very good GI doctor closer to home at a major hospital.
Don’t give up- keep pushing!

Thank you so much your very informative response! I have not had a gallbladder function test specifically but my MRI report back in 2021 showed multiple stones within the gallbladder. However, ultrasound report from March of 2026 shows "no evidence of gallstones, gallbladder wall thickening or pericholecystic fluid" and " IVC and pancreas are unremarkable". "Common bile duct measures 3 mm, kidneys and spleen are unremarkable, no ascites". I keep trying to sort everything out and make some sense of what I am experiencing but it is so frustrating. I am able to eat mostly everything, then sometimes I start feeling ill about 3 or 4 hours later usually after evening meal; sometimes there is no problem and I feel fine. Again, I appreciate your thoughts so vey much!

I just want to mention that there are tests that shows how well the gallbladder functions- releasing bile and such. I get nausea and occasionally pain after fatty meals. My gallbladder was removed years ago.

I'm sorry that you're having the nausea problems. My pcp prescribes me with Ondansetron. It's the generic version on of Zofran. I get diarrhea pretty bad some days because of bowel issues.

Thank you. Will look into the gallbladder testing at some point after I see what CT reveals.
