Trazodone for sleep?

Posted by jamesduke209 @jamesduke209, Jun 26 3:38pm

I average about 6-7 hours of sleep daily, sometimes more, and sometimes less. My optimum sleep where I wake up and feel well rested is 8-9 hours, which happens once in a while. I generally don't like taking anything for sleep I'll take a Benadryl 25mg tablet occasionally and that gives me about 7 to 7.5 hours of sleep.

Recently I was prescribed trazodone 25mg for sleep, but fear taking it because it's classed as SARI anti depressant and I'm afraid of side effects as I had an extremely bad experience with an SSRI that kept me up all night and made me worse at the time many years ago.

I'm thinking since Benadryl 25mg does a decent job maybe I can try Trazodone at 12.5mg?

Thanks!

I don't understand the "as needed" part, as I don't know
if I need a pill until I can't fall asleep for over an hour....
& then sometimes a pill works but again it takes awhile.

Although when traveling, I know I won't sleep in a
strange place so just take 2 Tylenol PM or some other
type of sleep aid.

Many medciations are on a as needed basis. I also have XANAC on as needed basis. Over time an ongoing taking of medication is going to lower it's affect on you. when taking it every day/ night year after year.

If you are traveling and know you will need help to sleep that is an example of a "as needed basis."

Trazadone is very quick acting and can be taken and quick action. For me and my wife we both know if we are under stress, anxiety, or worrying that we will need help fallling asleep. Many times in past and even now if don't fall asleep and can feel my mind racing when I try to go to sleep I get up and take a trazadone. Many doctors will tell you if you don't fall asleed within a certain amout of time to do something like reading, etc.

Have your doctors ever suggested a sleep study for you? Did you advise your doctors about taking telenol PM on an ongoing basis?

When I was first prescribed sleep prescription it was for Ambein. My psychiatric medication warned me that Ambein was very quick acting so don't take unless ready to go to sleep and also be aware of the common side affect of sleep walking. Ambien did not work for me at all and was given trazadone where over time it went from every night to as needed. That is for me not you as that goes for any medications mentioned on MCC it is our experience with them not yours.

Have you doctors mentioned or hae you tried OTC melotonin? It is a known natural sleep aid which many says works.

I have just decided to take sleeping tabs on certain nights for sure when
I have to be up for something in the morning, AND, if I take them early enough ( Like at 8:30 or so) I actually fall sleep, btw 10:00 & 11:00, after reading for awhile.
I try to follow all the suggestions: tart cherry juice, dark room, no lap top screen time before bed, Melatonin gummies 10 mg, Magnesium glycinate
gummies 100mg, but it does not work for me. Maybe an over active brain is better than a fuzzy one, but not at bedtime!

You mean the Valium tabs are going to kill you in the end
or???
Maybe your dosage is too high, or, you don't take
them early enough in the evening = morning brain fog. ??

I’ve used it in the past. It was incredible. It works in minutes. But do your research. Some meds can cause dementia later on.

Mate I'm 80 yrs old & I have Liver & Pan curies Cancer/ a Hart problem that only runs at half pace, plus High Blood presser & Diabetes, I'm on all sorts of
junk just to keep me alive and because of all the problems I do have that is why I find it hard to sleep, So my Dr gave me a heap of sleeping pills plus Valium to help take my mind off all my other problems. But at my age I've had a bloody good life so the only thing I want to do now is go out of here with a big smile on my face >(:0) because no matter how many Tabs I take it won't give me back the life I use to have any more & if I don't die from the Cancer which is a very very bad one because it in the Blood and can't be removed by having an opp or I could have a Hart attract tomorrow and drop dead anyway. So I can NOT see any point in fighting on anymore. Do I make myself clear ????? It is a waste of time. The 6 months of Chemo Treatment was hell so unless your 80 yrs old and have all the problems I have you would not understand. But I thank you from your Info and your interested and I wish you well (:0)

Yes, if you mean antidepressants. No proof Benzos cause dementia. I’ve used them for over 50 years and I’m fine.
