Traumatic Brain Injury: Come introduce yourself

Welcome to the Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) group on Mayo Clinic Connect.
This is a welcoming, safe place where you can meet people who know first-hand about living with a traumatic brain injury. Together we can learn from each other and share stories about challenges and triumphs, setbacks and the things that help.

Pull up a chair and connect. Why not start by introducing yourself? What is your experience? Got a question, tip or story to share?

not quite sure what i am looking at but hope you heal. i have been hit by a drunk driver and minimal injuries but still carry the scars. i hope that you have a good following and support group. this clinic connect is amazing at the people you can meet and their courage like you to carry on and make the best of it as you can, I'm just about to hear from my doctor what they are going to do about a cyst in my brain causing some pretty strange effects with the rest of me. just glad i didn't throw away my radiation mask. they might have to go that route again. well keep one foot in front of the other and have a blessed need someone to chat with just shout out. i might not be free next week but will get back as soon as i can.

@ridersagainstdrunkdr - I wanted to add my welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I've witnessed one brain surgery while leading a news media crew for a story on an "awake" brain procedure, the kind where the patient has to interact at various points during it.

I had never seen a surgeon drill into someone's head before and lift up the flap, and that was a lot to take in.

This is looking like it could be a photo of the top of your skull during brain surgery. Is that accurate, or will you tell more about what we are viewing in this picture?

@lisalucier that is a picture they took of the implant after they installed it in my skull I have more photos of the surgery being a harley rider since I was 13 im 41 now but when I was hit by a drunk driver I couldn't get any help as far as me being a victim so I started a awareness organization called RIDERS AGAINST DRUNK DRIVERS or RADD I talk at victim impact panel meetings for people who got dui charges or substance abuse meetings honestly I never been a drinker or used drugs most people wouldn't believe me because of how I look being covered in tattoos before my wreck I went to college and became a master certified harley davidson technician i was making 98 dollars a hour but since the wreck with all the health issues im on disability and it doesn't pay close to what I use to make but sorry I got off track my surgeon and his staff knew about this so they took pictures of my surgery so I can use them to educate others on how their choice of driving impaired effects others for their lives

My name is Jan and I fell down my stairs and hit my head on the tile floor 12/21. Had brain bleeding, stitches, 5 broken ribs, fractured clavicle, concussion, collapsed lung. In hospital 14 days but home two weeks ago and progressing. I worry a little because I have some numbness and tightness on the left side of my face but no symptoms with sight or attributable to stroke symptoms but I have a lot of dizziness whenever I get up or down or turn. Everything else is pretty good and I get another head cat scan tomorrow. I would say things aren't that bad and more temporary than permanent (hopefully)! I am so thankful not to be dead or had to have surgery so I cannot complain. I cut back my volunteer work to half time but I find it hard to get motivated to read or watch t.v. I enjoy my work. I am almost 83, retired at 80. Interested to hear more from others to see if where I'm at healthwise is similar. Thanks for any response.

After getting off life support and out of a coma I was sent to rehab I was a single father with my kids living with me I tried reaching out for help to cover rent ect for my kids and such in wyoming their was only churches that could help us no help as far as a victim from a intoxicated driver incident so I took my situation and put it to use i started Riders against drunk drivers i speak at victim impact panels here in wyoming praying that i can reach even at least one person if I can reach one person than im doing good my surgeon told me I would never ride again but ummm 😁 NOOOO he was proven wrong the thing about going through what i have is you realize who is truly their for you my ex took the kids and I have been dealing with this alone my mental health therapist has been pushing for me to get on one of these to talk about my experience and what I got through it has taken me years to start I just don't want any one to think I want pity or any one to feel sorry for me because I don't i want to help anyone else who may be going through the same situation because it makes it extremely worse going through it alone and not having any one that understands what its like

@ridersagainstdrunkdr Welcome to the Mayo clinic connect. its a shame that so many people are unaware, if not by choice or don't care till its a family member or friend. Then you get an earful and i know there are webinars, out there and just like here they have so many people and patients with a history of TBI or results from them. in daily in the email daily digest you can open the platform and find a variety of groups and a thousand voices to turn too, your situation has hit me at home, i am also in a TBI group and some days its very large still would hope on a Harley in a heart beat, will say a prayer for you ---- sent and have a blessed day today, some truly gifted people hear.
