Total hip replacement - What to expect for recovery

Posted by cak11555 @cak11555, Nov 29, 2018

I am having a total right hip replacement in six weeks. My surgeon leaves me to believe that I will be up and around in a few days, just no kitchen work. The physical therapist who came to evaluate me before hand felt I needed exrended care after surgery. What has been others experience following this kind of surgery? How has recovery gone for you?

I had left hip replacement. I’m 67, male, slim. I was able to take care of myself a couple days after being home. But, I am fairly athletic; bike, swim, pickleball.
However, I do have a low EF (ejection fraction from heart).
3 months after successful hip replacement I had lots of swelling on both legs and abdomen.
Had to have lasics in hospital to remove excess water.

ANYONE ELSE WITH LOW EF GET LONG TERM SWELLING???

Had right hip replacement 4 months ago. Am still feeling like the right leg is longer than the left. Any one have the same experience?

YES. Is the leg length discrepancy (LLD) altering your gait?

I had TKA on the Hana table in April 2022 and still trying to get back to normal. My surgeon hit a nerve in the side of the thigh that caused numbness and tingling and still goes on. My left foot and leg were swollen. The left foot is still one size bigger than the right. I finally found a wonderful PT person, even though I had PT after surgery, and she is really helping me get the leg back in shape. I'm glad I did the TKA but wish I hadn't done the anterior approach. There is less dislocation with that procedure, but when they pull the muscles apart it damages nerves and that takes a long time to regain. I was never told of all the side effects and wish I'd ask more questions, but as a patient I don't know them all. Good luck!

My 70 yr. old husband had both hips replaced. He had a painful long recovery, maybe 3 months. Now his 30 something doctor had the same procedure and was up and about in a week or two. So I think my husbands age delayed his recover but I have to tell you he is now 3 yrs. out and doing very well...good luck !

Thank you for responding. I’m 77 & had surgery Dec 1 & I’m struggling with all sorts of pain issues. I’ve been athletic so this has taken me by surprise. I can’t determine what is normal. I’ve been told that my recovery could take as long as a year; that is discouraging. I was hoping I would be golfing in 3 months but I’m struggling walking 35 minutes outdoors and was advised not to bend at the waist just yet. These are the types of details I was hoping someone would share. Can u help with details of his recovery? ❤️‍🩹

Had one hip replaced a few years ago. Arthritis. I took and would recommend anyone take pain medication --- not just ibuprofen or acetaminophen, something stronger Rx'd by your doc. There is no reason to just live with pain. It does not help in any way. If you can walk for 35 mins. you're doing very well!

I jad hip replacement surgery in January 2023. I did well with PT. It wasn’t until about 6 months post’op that I felt close to normal. Now that i am plus 1 year out, i am doing well. I have not gotten back to .y previous strength and endurance levels, but i can see progress. I walked/run a 10 k last month. K have a 5 k planned in late April and i hope to mostly run

Hi, I don't know your age, but my last hip replacements were put in when I was 61 years old, and I was told I could expect them to last 20-25 years if I was careful - including no running ( I was a lifelong runner.) 12 years later, they look good, but are starting to show a little wear - I do not want to undergo another replacement or revision, so I am safeguarding them with strength and flexibility exercises and low impact exercise, but I will never stress them with regular running.

Your results may vary, but I plan to err on the side of caution (I also dance a few hours every week.) Can you find a racewalking group to compete with?

Thank you. I don’t intent to run marathons in the future. 😥I am doing strength training with PT professionals. After hearing from several people, I’m at ease as to what to expect.
