Took NAC today
I bought a bottle of Jarrow's sustain 600mg NAC (N-Acetyl Cysteine) supplement. I took one tablet this morning and within 15 minutes, I started feeling really flushed and got extremely sleepy, tired, and dizzy. It lasted about 3 hours and slowly subsided. I did not notice any improvement in my cough or throat clearing. Has anyone experienced this when they took NAC for the first time? Will my body adjust to it? Thank you

I had to discontinue taking NAC because of the flushing burning sensation on my skin. I guess some people can tolerate it more than others.
@maliko i didn’t have any reaction to 600 mg of NAC. I did receive a tip from a Health Food store where I first found it.
I was told to buy a product / brand that had third party testing to ensure purity, but perhaps not everyone can tolerate the amino acid. With that kind of reaction, it might not be worth trying a different brand!
@maliko
With what you wrote above it appears you have "Jarrow's sustain 600mg NAC"
I have and have taken the Jarrow NAC Vegetarian 500mg. For me, I did not have any of the effects you mentioned after taking it. Jarrow does not say third party tested on the bottle but it is my understanding that they are quality products..from Jarrow.
If you do have sustained release that might be something to consider as the problem???? vs non sustained release. Sorry you had that reaction.
I am not sure we can expect immediate change in our mucus, it might take a while to make a change with continued use of the NAC. For myself, I don't take it everyday I try to rely on fluid intake, warm water and soups to help thin the mucus and use the NAC as a booster. That's me and my way of thinking.
Please don't get discouraged..... it is going to be a trial and error as so many things in life are.
We have to take into account the big picture also, what we eat, when we eat, are we eating healthy, our sleeping habits, and as well our worrying over things.....which can affect our system because worrying possibly causes emtional stress which can affect everything.
Looking forward to hearing about your bronchoscope results. Thinking of You.
Barbara
Hello Barabara, thank you for your thoughtful response. Maybe I ought to try non sustain release or like other brand of nac. I'm still waiting on a date for my bronchoscopy. Will certainly update you. Thank you Barbara!
@maliko I have not experienced any of the uncomfortable symptoms you experienced (skin rash etc) however my blood pressure - both systolic and diastolic- is lower and I don’t have high blood pressure. I have been taking 600 mg of NAC twice a day.
Just wondering, has anyone else experienced this issue and if so, have you taken a lower dose as a result or maybe cut back to 600 mg once a day?
I found research that suggested this amino acid, NAC, can lower blood pressure.
I’m glad you mentioned possible side effects as it prompted me to look into possible reasons for the change in blood pressure. It can make us tired and feel a bit dizzy etc and that isn’t pleasant either.
Thanks!
Good point. Next time I will make sure to check my blood pressure if I start having those symptoms again, thank you
I’m curious to know if others have noticed low blood pressure with NAC or were told it might happen.
Hope it doesn’t lower your blood pressure @maliko
This has nothing to do with nac but has anyone taken amakacin I fusion
Hello - as to NAC 600, after taking it for 6 months, my breathing improved and the doctor found that
my lung function test was much better than it had been before; my lung capacity went up by 30%. I have been taking it since January 2019, twice a day, one in the AM, one in the PM, with or without food. I never had any issues with it but my brand is not Jarro. It is from my local health food store, Debras Natural Gourmet in West Concord, MA - why don't you call them and see if they would mail it to you. Or they could help you with finding one like it. Their number is 978-371-7573. Good luck! Pamela in Sudbury, MA
I forgot to mention that at the time I began taking it, I was not coughing but having had MAC and bronchiectasis and numerous bouts of pseudemonas, my breathing was impacted. I believe it takes time for it to have an impact but it is not anything you notice right away. I feel it is mostly a "maintenance" thing for me. Perhaps begin with one a day, then work up to two a day after a month or so while you body gets used to it. But if the Jarro is causing the flushing, it wouldn't hurt to find another brand. Pamela
