Tongue cancer possible

Posted by rob454 @rob454, 3 days ago

What does a white gray tongue mean? My PCP says its thrush but I dont see it getting better with taking nystayin rinse. I also have chronic dry mouth at night which at times its unbearable. I'm worried I have tongue cancer. Does anyone have these symptoms,?

I'm sorry that you have to worry about such things, but this happens more often these days. Keep a close eye on your symptoms and watch for soreness in your mouth and tongue or lumps in your neck (cancer metastasizing to lymph nodes). Should any signs of a problem exist, get it checked out. If the prescribed treatment isn't effective within a short time, insist that further testing be done. Despite my sister having already experienced one round with oral cancer, the doctors were hesitant to investigate a sore spot on her tongue, dismissing it as an inflamed taste bud, that is until she insisted. She had been right to do so. Take care and be aware.

Ok. Thank you. I'm going to my dentist and then to an oral surgeon. My pcp says it's thrush yeast. I'm calling her on Monday.

Go go to an ENT. You will have a better chance of insurance paying the bill and an ENT who specializes in oral cancer and can do a biopsy if called for is your best bet. Good luck.

@pampou CAREFUL. I was in the hospital with swollen tongue. The hospital ENT was called and said it was a Hemotoma, and no concern--see a doctor in a few weeks In 2 days when it did not get better- I went to who I thought would know about these things, my dentist. He saw it and instantly was concerned and immediatley sent me to an oral dental surgeon. That person saw it and instantly sent me to a oral surgeon who has both a MD and DDS degree. I was admitted to hosptial the same day as I saw him and had tongue surgery 2 days later for cancer--denocarcinoma. My point, a ENT can be wrong or not knowledgeable. Need to take an active role in ones health.

Unfortunately there are good doctors and those who were probably last in their medical school class. When one is not satisfied with a doctor/dentist, don't be afraid of getting another opinion. My husband died from bladder cancer because his urologist said it was just inflammation from a bladder stone. My husband did not see another doctor for this condition for another year and this contributed to his death. When I am seeking out a doctor, I prefer one that is on the staff of a University teaching hospital and I always check their educational background. I look for the best available.

@pampou Good points, and exactly what I am indicating. Medicine is a PRACTICE, not a science. Make sure your doctor has the experience and education. Do not blindly accept what is said

I agree with56tburd. My rule of thumb is “when in doubt get it checked out.”
I would strongly word my request to your pcp, and do not fudge on your symptoms. Let pcp know it all. Best of luck to you that it is not a cancer🙏

I'm ok. Its not cancer. Its thrush. Saw pcp and dentist.
Thank you. Take care.
