To use Voltaren extra while on pred.

Is it acceptable to use Voltaren extra strength gel on a sore hip while taking 20mg pred daily for PMR. One week in.

I’m not a doctor, but I would expect that to be okay because with the topical Voltaren (an NSAID), there’s very little systemic absorption that would increase the risk of bleeding as an oral NSAID would.

I have one kidney, so I’m supposed to limit NSAIDs; my nephrologist would probably prefer I not take them at all, but no one had any concerns about topical Voltaren.

But my physiatrist told me that Voltaren is better when the joint and presumed inflammation is closer to the surface, such as with knee pain (which I think is what it was tested on originally), whereas with hip or back pain the source of inflammation is much deeper. I’ve never tried it, but I’d think it would be safe…

But again not a doctor, so depends on how risk averse or confident you are if you can’t check with your doctor. If you try it, I hope it helps though!
