Tissue in prostate obstructing flow of urine
Initial problem resulted after a surgery on my shoulder and not being able to urinate after the procedure. My doctor has prescribed Tamsulosin and Finasteride for 4 months and suggested I stay on a catheter (changing it every 30 days) until October. He sited my age 79 as a deterrent for Surgery and also after reviewing a look at the prostate (where he noted the tissue blocking) and a Urodynamic test (which he noted was good results as I have a pretty strong bladder). I am not too happy about keeping a catheter for another 3.5 months and then being on the meds for the rest of my life.

Maybe consult with an interventional radiologist for a prostate artery embolization, PAE. The urologist may not bring this option up because they don’t do it.

1 ReactionPlease get a second or even a third opinion. There are options for you so you can get rid of the catheter. Your age should not be a deterrent, perhaps you have other underlying health concerns?

Several years back I had a severe unitary track infection. I could not pee! They put a Foley catheter in me. I didn't like . . . a bag strapped to my leg that I had to empty every hour or so. After the infection was cleared up they put on Tamsulosin and Finasteride but kept the Foley. It turned out that by bladder was damaged and I needed some way to pee. Because that urologist would not listen to me regarding the Foley I went to another urologist. He immediately took out the Foley and said the Finasteride probably was not doing any good . . in most cases it do not . . . so I dropped it but kept the Tamsulosin, it helps me. He taught me about intermittent catheter.. He personally did like Foley catheters . . . sitting in your bladder for months on end. Self catheterization changed my life. I do it twice a day . . . morning and evening. I travel the world, I snorkel, I hike and I go swimming . . . . and I am 80 or as they say in France . . . 4 20's! I know everyone circumstance are different . . . but you might talk to your urologist and see if it is an option for you for the next few months. Take care . . . good luck
