Tinnitus- any suggestions?

Posted by susanfalcon52 @susanfalcon52, May 30 6:12am

I have developed tinnitus recently. It seems that it may have started on a flight. As we were descending, I felt terrible ear pain. Then, gradually started noticing a white noise in ears.

My tinnitus is so loud after being on this thread! 🙂 It really is the brain.

Mine too. I know, for me, it increases with anxiety or vigorous exercise and then gets less loud the calmer I get. Unfortunately it’s still quite loud all the time

It will probably reduce over time. It requires patience which is hard with noise in our ears! Doctors don't have much to offer other than "put it on the back burner." The brain does adjust and the noise goes into the background of your awareness.

Given the cause, I am also wondering if yours is temporary.

Often hearing loss is a trigger: the brain tries to fill the void with noise- or at least that is what docs have told me. It sounds like yours was triggered by changes in air pressure so hoping it is there for just a short time.

ps I hear mine now because I am writing about tinnitus!!

@bettersleep68 I have mostly gotten used to it, and it fluctuates. I tried overnight rain sounds and it gave me terrible vertigo so not an option!

We are told there is no treatment or cure for tinnitus. However, good things are happening. Tinnitus is the most common disabling condition reported by service men and women returning from combat zones. News of this new treatment just became available. It will be interesting to see how effective it is.

I never had Tinnitus until I had a brain MRI. Was not given appropriate noise protection and it started about 10 minutes after I left the center. LOUD hissing, vertigo and a constant headache. That was 16 months ago and I am glad I will be 80 this year…Hopefully I will not have to live with this much longer…

I have been interested in treatments for tinnitus because I got it after my second foot surgery. I thought it was from the anesthesia, but after a few weeks it was still there. I did some reading and realized it from the 800mg of ibuprofen I was taking. I was referred to cognitive behavioral therapy sessions by an ENT at Mayo. It makes it manageable for me but my case isn't severe.

My husband, on the other hand is on permanent disability because of tinnitus caused by infusion drugs like Remicaid. It is like a high pitched tea going off at all times and quite loud. He can't sleep or hold a job because of it. He also has other side effects from the infusions like neuropathy that put him on disability. He has been through a company called Sound Relief which cost us $5000 cash. He got the fancy sound hearing aids and that was it. His tinnitus got worse, not better. It was a waste of money. So we are still trying to find treatment for him.
