TIA aftercare for several weeks

Posted by ch47 @ch47, Nov 3, 2023

My husband suffered a small stroke on Sunday that was like nothing that I could have ever expected-he asked to go to the hospital, and we went immediately.
He became violent and had to be sedated for two days. Suffered other stroke issues, speech, etc. Then he started to come out of it and after two days, walking talking and getting back to himself. No paralysis. Every test in the world, except for an invasive spinal test, that they would have been done if he hadn’t recovered so well and quickly. Ultimately, they couldn’t find the actual stroke but doc said all of his tests were great for everything, and if the stroke was very small it could hide between the sections of the MRI, Only thing that shows is some comprehension issues for current potential stressful situations,( like staying at inpatient rehab for a week.) And also some hand/eye stuff.
He went to rehab and then left before the evaluation. I was devastated.
He did agree to seek rehab near home, but we have to wait 2-3 weeks before he can start.
So, now, what suggestions does anyone have for dos and don’t s until rehab?
I am still reeling from 5 days of no sleep and stress, and every one on this site has always been so helpful, hoping there will be some ideas…
Thank you in advance!

I was in the hospital for 2 days. I had a catscan and an MRI. They put me on Blood thinner medication. I was very lucky. It only affected my eyesight for a short time. No physical problems. I had to take a stress test which I failed. They recommended a nuclear test which I declined. My thinking was I just had a stroke and I will not have my blood racing and dislodge something else. it took a long time for anyone to talk to me and give me details. Finally had an appointment with the Neurologist. She showed my head on the screen. My right Carotid artery is totally blocked. A small part of my brain died but the good news is my left artery is supplying my right side with blood .So that side has some calcification but was told nothing to worry about. Had to see a Cardiologist. No problem with my heart. I am 81 and the hospital made all these appointments. I hope you have medical staff that explains everything, I felt better once I had details may be you and your husband will feel better. Whatever good or bad I want to know.

Thank you for sharing and I’m happy to hear that your body was able to compensate and heal from this trauma. Were you almost your current age when this happened? He’s 76.
He is still trying to understand how inpatient rehab would have worked, not understanding how you had to go every day for 3 hours of therapy daily for a week, and not get it over in two days-not stay for 5 weeks;, or not go once a week; this thing is still very confusing to him. Just not comprehending the whole concept of one week of scheduled intense treatment. Therefore, the doctors have not had a chance to go over clearly what has happened to him.
So, now in 2-3 weeks, he/we will have to do the same thing, 3 hours a day, but since he is not staying there, we will have to go back 2-3 times a day. They said they would try to schedule some appointments together when they could, but…
I hope he will complete the program when it starts.
Did you do any rehab? How long before you were able to drive?
Since he left inpatient rehab just after being checked in, he was afraid because he couldn’t understand the concept, we have no idea of the appropriate after care until I can get him in to see someone.
If you had a conversation, he is perfect, and I’m thankful for that. But we went into a field tonight to play with our 4 year old 70 lb wonderful dog, and he was afraid of giving him a treat, thinking he would get bit. He doesn’t bite! Good news, I was able to teach/refresh him as to how to give our baby a treat and feel safe. It’s little stuff that shows up here and there.
Sorry I’m long winded, but some of his adult children, they don’t live near, don’t understand that he does have some issues and is scared. So, I’m sort of working against two fronts…really thankful that you are there…ps eyesight was somewhat affected, (had trouble tracking a golf ball just before 🤣) need to make appointment there too, but need to make sure eyesight comes back to where it will be, first. We are not the first or worst people with this issue,…just wading my way through the issues
Thanks

I hope your husband wil keep improving. I had my stroke this past September and yes, I was 81. I did not tell my partner that I had trouble judging distances . I am driving and it took a wile. I was afraid backing out of my driveway so I would only drive at a time when there was very little traffic and kept telling myself you can do this and then a sigh of relief ...I can do this. I am very independent and the thought of being stuck at home and ask for rides scared me. I willed myself to do things even though I was scared. Coming to an intersection and seeing a green light, green means you can go I told myself. I did a lot of talking to myself. I do not drive in heavy traffic and still in light traffic I tell myself ...watch the traffic all the time. Still afraid sometimes. I hope your husband will ...will himself to do things and work through some of his issues. Keep up your spirits with your help he can get back to mostly normal. Sending hugs to you

You are wonderful for sharing your experiences!
81, and such amazing recovery!
I was in a vehicle that had an accident 6 years ago, 65 at that time, no blood and guts, but miserable nerve issues since and I am now petrified of big highway driving. I can totally understand your hesitation and how you talk yourself into doing the things you want/need to do.
I wasn’t clear, did you eventually tell your partner about your anxiety and were they understanding?

We had eye doc appointment yesterday, and whatever was the problem is gone, another small miracle. Doctors said to wait a bit, so we did, just to see if it came back.
He has been driving inside our community, I felt it would be good practice, and we live on a culdesac, so out of our driveway is pretty easy. Today I suggested that he back out of our long driveway so he can feel comfortable. We’ll see if he practices.
But lots of crazy busy streets once out of here. Will suggest just trying some of the medium ones…usually plays golf, so I do all the running.
We are at OT right now for an eval, and I told the therapist my concerns and left the meeting. Just worried about cutting up dog treats and he had two short times at the driving range, and he came home right away. Didn’t go well.
Golf is his life, and I pray he will consent to do the ot, just for what he needs.
Will definitely need pt, because other than great doggy walking, no upper body exercise. His back has some issues and I don’t want him to make it worse.
Sigh…
One day at a time…we have such great opportunities for healing…hope he takes advantage
Keep in touch about your improvements, please!!!

I’m 81 years old and had a TIA mini-stroke while I was preparing to leave hospital after recovering from a severe UTI. The only major thing that occurred was the loss of my ability to speak as well as ability to use my right hand. What a weird thing to happen when one is supposedly completely over any big health issues. As it turned out, my speaking ability went back to normal in a few hours as did the numbness in my hand. Consequently, I was sent home from the hospital. A few weeks later, I went to see a cardiologist and tests showed that my aortic valve was in terrible shape. Shortly thereafter I was in surgery getting an aortic valve replacement. It seems strange to me that I had no symptoms of heart problems up until I had the TIA in hospital. If that hadn’t happened, lord knows what situation I would be in now. I’m hoping everyone looking for help and info here is able to find it and get needed assistance and support!

So happy that things have returned to normal, and they found the issue before it became a permanent problem…
Did they test for all that stuff in hospital after your TIA?
They are classifying my husband’s “episode “ as a stroke, as time went forward, although there was no evidence of bleed, clots, anything. He was there almost 5 whole days.
First two he was wild, and out of it and had to be sedated. When he started to come out of it, he had no residual symptoms except for some brain fuzzy. I think they did every test possible, including a brain mri. Since he has pulmonary fibrosis, just diagnosed about 10 months ago, they also found an aneurism at that time, which they are watching and have had tested to see if he would be able to have simple or open chest surgery, if needed…those results have not been shared, and I don’t push it because I don’t want to stress him anymore.
Cardiologist stopped by in hospital, as I called her, and reviewed his stuff and said stay away from sick people…🤣 see you in March for regular appointment.
Tough year for a very healthy active 76 year old…still feels a little “drugged” but been two weeks since any meds
Again, glad you are doing well !!!
