Thrush and Mouth Bacteria

Posted by wildvines @wildvines, Feb 26 10:01am

My father was in the hospital for months after complications from surgery. As a result, he is currently on a G Tube. He developed thrush and bacteria in the mouth after being in the hospital. We've tried many medications, antibiotics and home remedies, but he still has growth in his mouth and throat. He just finished taking SMZ/TMP and Linezolid, but not much change. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Bless Him. I battled thrush for 3 months after COVID. What worked for me was Diflucan 150 mg for 3-4 days and Nystatin Mouth Rinse (you do this about 4 times and day rinse and swallow). The mouthwash may not be
doable at this point with the G tube. Thrush is stubborn and it may take a few rounds of both of these meds. IF he takes a lot of Diflucan, you will need to have his liver panel done to check his liver.

Candida (Thrush) usually starts in the gut. Mine is from antibiotics/steroids. I presently have thrush from them
and I am taking Diflucan & Nystatin.

Keep mouth as clean as possible in his condition. If the corners of his mouth are cracked ask them for an antifungal cream for that.

Praying for him and you. Blessings....

Thank you for the reply. He took Diflucan and Nystatin for weeks, but did not help. Maybe he has more of a bacterial problem now? It goes back into his throat and makes his voice rough and scratchy.

He hasn't tried Clotrimazole. Now he's taking another round of SMZ/TMP. Hoping it works.

The label of the Nystatin that I’ve been using states that it shouldn’t be swallowed.

Armando, It is either or. Some doctors say do not swallow and some swish, gargle and swallow. Mine says to swish, gargle and swallow on the direction label, so that is what I do. Crazy isn't it?

Blessings....
