Problems months after colon resection surgery: What Helps?

Posted by joyce1 @joyce1, Feb 25, 2017

Three months after colon resection I had a severe stomach cramp this morning and have not had a bowel movement yet. This is the first time this has happened. So far things have been good.

Things will improve, I know it might not seem like that right now. One day you will realize that your down days and cramps are further apart, and your life has been having more days between flair ups. I know for me asparagus was a big mistake and any gassy vegetables had consequences for a few months. Mostly, I ate protein foods and drank protein shakes [which I tolerated better] for about 3 to 4 months.

My husband rushes to the toilet after every meal. He is not passing dry gas and leaks when he passes gas. He has several stools a day leaving him exhausted. He had his stoma reversal In April 22. He is on folfoliri and bevacizumab for metasis along the surgical scar and has had 6 cycles with six more to follow. How can I help him

Whoa! Skip the shakes until you talk to your doctor. Maybe you can find foods that your body can tolerate. Sorry that you are suffering. I know in the beginning, after the surgery, I couldn't find food that seemed to follow a pattern. Good luck, you are in my thoughts.

Hello @brenda57

There are clear protein drinks (no milk products) that you might look for. They are sold on Amazon and in some stores. You might try one of them to see if they produce as much cramping.

So,maybe things will get better for me in the months to come.I can’t make plans to do things cause never know when the cramping turns in the painful cramps and never know if the food I eat will just go right thru me or will it wait till I at least get to a bathroom😔May God give strength to you, myself and everyone who is trying to adjust this different lifestyle🙏

It does get better. Adjusting and finding out what foods that I could tolerate seemed to be trial and error. Gas issue becomes less with time. Sometimes it can be frustrating because symptoms don't seem to always follow a predictable pattern. What helped me was to proceed as if things were like before (as much as possible be positive) and walking. Be kind to yourself, baby steps.

I am not even sure what normal is anymore. The new normal went through different stages and was and still is not predictable. It has been 8 months since my surgery and timing is not like it was before. I feel much better than I did four months, ago. Life has returned to my previous activities, and I can tolerate more food groups each week. The first 4 months were the most difficult.

Si como comenté a mi todo hasta ahora ha ido bien, he hecho mi vida normal, como de todo dentro de una dieta baja en grasas, pero por lo demás todo bien gracias a Dios.

Saludos

I hurt from left side to right side across abodomen.Cramping usually starts after eating and that is small portions like 2 eggs and slice of bread with milk.Somtimes I can cramp without eating and Dr claims I can eat anything.I know if I eat beef meat I really have to chew to make sure it can digest well or I will hurt even more. They claim I need to move around, well I do move around and after 30 minutes of moving around I hurt at bottom of belly😔They found fragment in urethra tubing that they claim might be making my back hurt, but back has been hurting since I came out of surgery.Seems like if I had a stone I would have passed it by now.I have no problem going to bathroom and not passing blood😔

It’s questionable when the Dr. Says we can eat anything we want because that is not the case. I was told the same thing and it’s not true. I struggle to keep any food down.
