Problems months after colon resection surgery: What Helps?

Posted by joyce1 @joyce1, Feb 25, 2017

Three months after colon resection I had a severe stomach cramp this morning and have not had a bowel movement yet. This is the first time this has happened. So far things have been good.

Hi Paul,
So nice to see your post. It's been almost two years since my surgery and I am suffering more now then before the surgery. I have constipation issues but that's just the half of it. I need to take synthroid because I don't have a thyroid. Years agos had t cancer. This resection changed the whole dynamic of my gut. I am now having trouble metabolizing my medication. It sounds bizarre but the synthroid stays in my system and causes havoc. I experience every side effect from the medication from physical pain to osteoporosis. Every doctor is puzzled by this situation. I don't know where to go anymore and am frightened that there will be no remedy for me. It is taking a terrible toll of me physically and mentally. If there is anyone out there with a suggestion I would soooooo appreciate it. Thanks for your concern. God bless you and hope you are hanging in there. Faylene

Hi @faylenepearl, not being able to metabolize medications is challenging.

Have you heard of pharmacogenomics (PGx)? In short, PGx or drug-gene testing looks at how genes affect the body's response to medications. Emerging tools for PGx testing can guide your health care provider to tailor your medications based on your genes.

I had colon resection..laparoscopic AND open due to adhesions on Jan 4. I thought I was healing great. But now it has been 8 weeks and I have hot pains all across lower abdomen and stabbing pain where surgery was. I just had a THIRD cat scan and they say EVERYTHING looks fine...but I HURT and I BURN. I am SO frustrated!

I have sever pain burning stabbing contractions like pain that when it hits I can't put any weight on my right foot it sends excruciating pain thru my hip. Pain is lower right side. I've had a partial gastrectomy with duodal switch and an appendectomy also liposuction and tummy tuck. This has almost made my life unbearable. Thankfully pains do let up after 20-30 mms feels like someone pulled a plug and the pressure is relieved.. I can feel where it was. I pass out sometimes from it and I am exhausted after it

Hi everyone,
I had a colon resection on 1/10/16. I have to say I experienced pretty much what you all experienced after surgery. I honestly think it took over 2 years to get back to normal. I feel fine and everything is normal now.

But the Dr's also moved my Colonoscopies out now to 3 yr check ups. Instead every 6 months and once a yr. When did you all have your last colonoscopies?
I swear the cleansing solution they make us drink to check out colons causes our systems to go haywire for months. But this is just my opinion I am no Dr. It is either a coincidence that about after 1 yr of not having to get cleaned out. I am finally back to normal..

I had stomach pains on, and bouts of constipation and diarrhea.. Food just did not settle right for a long time. My stomach was swelling up. Now finally I feel my old self.

Please keep checking with your Dr's to make sure something else is not going on. I kept going to the DR to see why I felt sick? But once it got past a year after my last colonoscopy, I noticed my stomach issues had settled down. Coincidence or Not????

I don't know the true answer if a colonoscopy can create these issues for months afterwards?

I wish you all the best..
Jackie

I had colon resection surgery three months ago. Every 2-3 days I have a firm movement. If I have another one that I end up with diarrhea.

Suggest you research the role of Low Anterior Resection Syndrome on colonic motility. It may explain how enteric nervous system and tissue damage from low anterior resection and radiation can affect the start and stop actions in the colon. With that understanding and experimentation, you may be able to control or eliminate the malfunction.
