Three attempts to get a biopsy and still not able to.

Yesterday was the third attempt to get a biopsy. The first was in the gynecologist’s office- I had asked to have it under GA in the hospital. The second was a month ago, a MyoSure hysteroscopy dilation and curettage under GA in the hospital by my gynecologist. The third was today and was a hysteroscopy dilation and curettage performed by my oncologist. The results were all basically the same: the cervix is too narrow and there is scarring, which prevents them from getting into the uterus for a biopsy. Feeling disappointed.

My oncologist set up a virtual appointment for September 23, 11 days from now. It has almost been two years of waiting to find out what’s going on. Has anyone else experienced a similar situation? What was the procedure that finally produced a biopsy?

@bocabuckeye I'm really sorry to hear that you're going through this. I've been through something similar in the past year. In November 2024, my gynecologist attempted a D&C, but wasn’t able to complete the procedure. Then, in April 2025, she tried to perform a hysterectomy, but again, she couldn't get in. She referred me to a gynecological oncologist since he had more advanced surgical expertise. I finally had a hysterectomy in July, and the results came back with Stage 1a, Grade 1 cancer. Interestingly, my surgeons did not suspect cancer at all. For the last five years, I had been experiencing heavy bleeding and pelvic pain. I hope you find the answers you’re looking for soon. Best wishes

Heather, I’m sorry to hear that you’ve been through similar experiences. I’m curious, what prevented your initial D&C from being completed?
My bleeding is not heavy, it’s spotty, the pelvic pain is constant but the levels of pain differ. Other symptoms pop up and I wonder if they are related, I guess time will tell. Thank you for sharing your story. I wish you all the best.

@heather2025 Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. Thank you for sharing what you went through tryig to get a biopsy and a hysterectomy until you were referred to a gynecological oncologist with the expertise you needed. Heavy bleeding and pelvic pain for 5 years prior to the hysterectomy? That's just awful - how are you feeling now? Do you need additional treatment?

@bocabuckeye My gynecologist attempted a D&C in November and a hysterectomy in April, but was unable to access my cervix because it was too narrow.

@naturegirl5 I have a consultation with my gynecologic oncologist tomorrow to discuss the removal of my ovaries and testing of my lymph nodes. The doctor did not suspect cancer initially, which is why I kept my ovaries. My cancer is estrogen and progesterone positive. While I'm not happy about entering medical menopause, reducing my risk of recurrence is my top priority. I'm grateful that my cancer was detected early, and I will need follow-up exams over the next five years. However, I still need to investigate why I'm experiencing pelvic pain after my hysterectomy.
Thank you for the warm welcome 🙂
