This and That and Talk - My Transplant

As our Mayo Connect community grows, I am constantly meeting organ transplant members on a wide variety of forums with a wide range of issues that are not directly transplant specific. However, because we are all transplant recipients, we have a special connection: a unique journey and best of all - a new life! We don't always need help or advice. Many times we just want to chat with someone like us! That is my purpose in starting This and That and Talk.

As a two year kidney transplant patient, I get so excited to share experiences with people that understand this phase of the journey (infection, reduction of meds, vampire visits, biopsy or not, etc). Does anyone have any insight on “green salt”? I’ve read that is has a minimal level of sodium and wonder if this could be an acceptable replacement for other salts.

Hi @tream01 Interesting that you asked about Green Salt as I’ve been considering this too! I’ve been reading articles about the salt that’s made from dehydrated samphire (sea asparagus) which has a natural salty taste. I’ve had samphire on top of a salad and it really gave that great hint of salt without leaving my mouth all burning.

Here are some of the links to articles I’ve read. You’ve probably seen them too. Not sure some of them are what I’d call credible sources of info…they should be taken with…a grain of salt. Pun intended. But looking at the product, where it’s grown, the nutrients and the theory behind it…why not?
I’m actually going to try this myself. I’m curious, like you, to see if anyone else has tried the Green Salt.

Considering trying it. I checked with the ALF and they were not aware of any downsides. I need to speak to my transplant team on another matter, and will see if they are aware of any reason to stay away.

I’d be curious if you find out any information from the transplant team if you don’t mind sharing.
I won’t see my team again until October. I’ve tried to do a little more research and I really can’t see any drawbacks unless there are amounts of minerals that would interfere with meds.
I know you have a lot going on right now, I hope all goes well for you.

My husband had a liver transplant on November 15. He came back quite quickly. He’s 71.
After leaving the hospital we stayed at the Gift of Life house.
When home I ordered some fruit and veggie spray. I kept wiping tables, counter, phones, or ant surfaces. Extra careful everyday cleaning the bathrooms etc
On New Year’s Day my husband couldn’t breathe. We went to the ED in Mankato and they wanted him airlifted to Rochester. He’s still in ICU with a bacterial infection. Histoplasmosis. They are sure he had in his body before the transplant. We all do but being immune compromised started it up. His chest X-rays are still almost all white, on strong antibiotics and high flow cannula oxygen. Anyone have any experience with that? It’s still a high dose. I am wondering how long if someone reads this who is familiar and what the future may look like???

I am so sorry to hear about the Histoplasmosis infection. What immune suppression meds and dosages is your husband taking? Is immune suppression reduced now?

@ckm, I have no experience with histoplasmosis. I hope that your husband is improving. I can imaging that this has been a frightening experience, especially to be transported back to Mayo so soon after transplant surgery.
How is he doing now? Is his recovery back on track?

Hi,
Those of you who got your transplant done out of state, are you required by your commercial(not Medicare) insurance company to do blood work in the same state as the ordering provider? Another words, if you get a lab order from out of state provider, do you have to have a local provider rewrite it so that it would be covered by insurance??? Just curious if this is a standard policy. Looking forward to your response.
