The Power of Hope

Posted by @roxie43 in Brain & Nervous System, Aug 11, 2012

There are times, circumstances, life's trials and tribulations that often cause one to lose hope. I know how it feels to feel so hopeless that nothing seems worth it anymore.. It is a horrible state of mind to be in! Then, something or someone comes along and renews that sense of meaning and having faith that this too shall pass. The past year has been very challenging, stressful, depressing and I felt so hopeless.
I am in a different place today and I owe it to my friends at Mayo, family, peers, wonderful doctors and my faith that was surely tested over and over.
How has hope positively impacted your life??
Wishing you all blessed times and renewed HOPE!

For me my dear friends faith and hope go hand in hand. I no that over the past 6 months and my dear friends who have carried me through this time and I'm forever grateful, that my faith never faltered, and know I am living with the hope of things that have just turned around for me.
We need to live for know and follow our dreams and when we need to rely on the ones that really care for us to hold us up for a while. Take care Piglit

I agree... sometimes we do not realize that there are some that have it so much worse.. It's difficult to see this when we are consumed with our own issues.

You no at times I think that our faith is tested and we are at times challenged more that we should be . But I also beleive that this makes us stronger and in the end our faith will continue to give us the strength that we need. I can tell that your scared and it's so not a good feeling I know this. Not every experience with a hospital has to be a bad one maybe you should trust and go earlier. I have had not so good experiences over the years too, but I have also had excellent ones to. Take care alwyas here Piglit

My brother has suffered from headaches for the past 1.5 years. He says when he tries to focus on anything (reading, looking at tv/computer, just looking at anything) it causes severe pain. He says the only time he has relief is for about 20 min right after he wakes up.he has seen optometrists, optomologists, neuro optomologists, 3 different neurologists, and a headache specialist. Everyone says his eyes and brain are fine. He has been on multiple medications and nothing has helped. He is struggling as well with hopelessness. Our family has been trying to help, but we have run out of ideas.

Hi JoniReb. Just wanted to welcome you and say that I have had anxiety all of my life from a young age as well, and that there are many of us who do understand and care. God Bless you too and take care Piglit

Hi All,
Thank you for responding and making me feel like I am not alone.. I too often feel like hope is lost and then I see a glimpse of it.. I really get upset at the saying "WHAT DOES NOT KILL US ONLY MAKES US STRONGER". sometimes, because when we take beating after beating we don't always feel stronger. Nonethless, we have to believe that life has to get better for all of us...how much should we be expected to suffer??
God bless you all..
Hugs,
Rox

I know that my faith and hope with things has been more than tested over these past months. I feel that at times in all our lives that we are faced with challenges that confront us head on. But I do believe that things will turn around and start to look up for us. We are so lucky to have dear friends and need to cherish them each and everyday. Our friends hold us up when at times we feel like we can't fly, and they help us to learn again. Hugs Piglit

I think I have been losing hope in my faith and religion...I am vegan, and I just don't understand why so many people who have religious faith don't care about the abuse and suffering and killing of our fellow beings, the animals. I am glad not to eat them, and am happy that I do not partake in this cruel and insane system, but I live with my fellow human beings who seem just to be hypocritical about love and compassion. It depresses me intensely.

Funny that you should mention that saying WHAT DOESN'T KILL US MAKES US STRONGER, I use that phrase. I believe I use it because the battles are like a do or die situations and when I make it through by the grace of God, I find it very convenient to say. I am glad to be here to say it because it ain't easy but must keep plowing through the different obstacles. He gives us more than enough to conquer our trials and tribulations. The battle are already won! The proof is in the day; I found this wonderful supportive site! Mayo Clinic! Thank you!!!!! 🙂

I too have always had hope, but more after coming to Mayo. It's crazy how much I have missed being sick half my life, but I am ready to move on with help from some great people in Rochester. They are one of the few places that offer a non invasive treatment program. It has always been my philosophy to hope for a better tomorrow, but I never knew they'd keep getting better and better at this rate!

I am proud of you for having hope....always. This can be difficult and I will admit that sometimes hope and faith can be tested making one think life will never get better. Today, I have hope and although I am still not where I want to be I feel blessed. Hugs

Living daily with the different obstacles and challenges will definitely try and shatter any bit of hope we possess and it don't take much to take it out of our grasp, but like you mentioned with the help of Mayo Clinic staff and family and friends we can overcome all challenges in life. Let us all keep striving for better days one day at a time.

Hi Friends,
I am so happy that this discussion is liked and read by many... There are times when having hope can be so challenging because it appears that when we take 2 steps forward something happens and makes us jump back 20 steps. Nonetheless, we have to remind ourselves of our individual and common stories are realize that we are here because somewhere within us there is a glimpse of hope, faith and determination.
Like many of you, I have been through so much but I get up even if forced at times and refuse to give up on myself. So, love yourselves and never give up on yourselves because you have to be your biggest fan during trying times...
Thank you all for sharing & God Bless

Hope changes everything. When hope is lost everything is lost as long as we have hope there is something to hold on to. So my friends don't lose hope at any cost. Live with hope because it is something that will stand by you even when no one else does.

Hello,
Everyone in life goes through ups and downs and I know how it feels to always feel down. Interestingly, I find that if I at least have faith and hope things appear a little less burdensome. You are stronger than you feel. You have most likely bounced back before and will do so once again. Happy New year..

Hello My Friends,
How is everyone coping? I know firsthand how difficult it can be to have hope when everything seems to be going so very wrong. Growing up with a religious grandmother was a blessing because no matter how hard hits me I try my best to have a glimmer of hope. Please continue to believe that life is not as bad as it seems and that we are STRONG and can be healthy and happy. It takes work and hope!
