Testosterone “Supplements” After RT?

Posted by docwatson @docwatson, Nov 22, 2022

I had proton therapy @ Mayo/PHX (can’t recommend them high enough) in 2019, PSA now below 0.2. I caught Covid in late October, just now getting over the symptoms, but still a lot of fatigue. Our local health food store highly recommended Host Defense “Breathe” mushroom supplements. These include cordyceps, which may (depend on whose research) increase testosterone. So my generic question is, is anyone taking, or avoiding, any kind of testosterone supplements after successful proton therapy? Thanks in advance.

Just a personal decision of course but I'm avoiding anything that might increase T levels. I run anything I take through the docs for an opinion before starting anything just in case there's a side effect I'm unaware of.

Lupron killed my body's ability to produce testosterone. After about 18 months post Lupron my testosterone score remained at about 15 and was not Rising so my urologist put me on androgel, a testosterone replacement. This caused my breasts to enlarge so I stopped the testosterone replacement and later learned to prevent my breasts from enlarging they should have been radiated before I started the testosterone replacement. Now I will live with a testosterone measurement of about 15 for the rest of my life and be fatigued and tired. Yet, the benefit is that I'm less likely to have a prostate cancer recurrence because of the low testosterone.

Hello, thanks for sharing. I’m sorry to hear of your situation and have empathy for you. Myself, I’m on an active surveillance follow-up plan. My oncologist discussed putting me on Lupron following my surgery. However, I decided to pursue active surveillance instead, basically for the reasons you’ve outline: lack of energy, low testosterone etc. I know there isn’t one best solution. Hopefully, my choice continues to works out for me. It’s been 11 months since my surgery. My PSA and testosterone levels are being monitored every three months. I wish you good luck going forward.

I had a lot of problems after Lupron and Proton beam therapy. I was weak and had difficulty walking. I had my testorone tested and it was low but not horrible(530).
I started Testorone therapy 1 ml/100mg injection every two weeks and it has changed my life. My PSA went from .01 to .2 but I am told it should settle below .1. Testorone does not cause prostate cancer it is the absence of it that stops it from growing.

That is good to hear about Testosterone, I have Prostate cancer now and had to stop my T. My body does not make it so now it’s down to 27.
How long did you wait till after treatment to start Testosterone shots.

ClomiPhen Citrate is an anti estrogen that is frequently prescribed with Testorone therapy and likely would solve your breast enlargement issue,
Curiously, there have been observations that exposure to higher than natural doses of androgens can kill the sensitized castration-resistant prostate cancer cells.

It is mostly used for infertility in women. If you search for it online add the term bodybuilding. I know this because I was prescribed this as well as Armour Thyroid for Testorone replacement therapy. My PSA jumped to .2 but went back down to les than .1 after a few months.
Certainly talk to your doctor.
