Tdap Vaccine & Td Vaccine

Posted by kornyali @kornyali, Aug 22, 2023

I had the Td vaccine in February of 2023. I need to get the Tdap vaccine for whooping cough. Both the Td and Tdap vaccines are for tetanus and diphtheria. Tdap includes pertussis (whooping cough), which Td does not include. Am I safe to get the Tdap, since I already got the Td for tetanus and diphtheria at the beginning of the year? Didn't know if it was safe to get a second vaccine that also includes two of the same things.

Hi @kornyali, Welcome to Connect. Here's what the CDC says about the vaccines:

"All adults who have never received one should get a Tdap shot. This can be given at any time, regardless of when they last got Td. This should be followed by either a Td or Tdap shot every 10 years."

Can you verify it's OK to have the Tdap vaccine with your doctor?

Based on the information provided, it should be safe for you to get the Tdap vaccine even though you already received the Td vaccine earlier this year.

The Td (tetanus and diphtheria) vaccine provides protection against tetanus and diphtheria. The Tdap vaccine provides protection against tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (whooping cough).

Getting the Tdap vaccine will boost your immunity against tetanus and diphtheria, while also giving you protection against pertussis. It is recommended that you get a Tdap vaccine every 10 years as an adult. Since it has been about 7 months since your Td vaccine, it is appropriate timing to get the Tdap for continued protection.

The tetanus and diphtheria components of the Td and Tdap vaccines are the same. Getting the Tdap so soon after the Td will not over-immunize you or cause any safety concerns. It will simply provide an additional boost to the tetanus and diphtheria immunity you recently received, while adding in the pertussis component.

So in summary - yes, it is safe to get the Tdap vaccine even though you already got the Td vaccine earlier this year. The Tdap will give you continued protection against tetanus and diphtheria, plus the added protection from pertussis. Let me know if you have any other questions!
