Tapering off of Trazadone

Posted by ksbrockman1 @ksbrockman1, Apr 19 10:03am

Hello,
I have been taking 50mg of Trazadone nightly to help with my sleep but I have been getting a sensation during the day when I stand up like I am going to drop down or fall, not dizzy.
I would like to stop taking it all together. How can I taper off of it? Thank you!

I would have your blood pressure checked. I'm not a doctor, and I note that you don't get dizzy but I'd still get it, and blood sugar checked.

This is more of a medical matter, and I agree that checking with a doctor would be the best and most important step. 50mg of trazadone is considered a very low dose. I agree that you need to rule out other health problems first....

My Neurologist prescribed Trazadone 50mg for my insomnia, but instructed me to take only half a table. Sometimes I sleep through the night, at other times I don't sometimes. I agree with Teacher 502. Talking with the doctor sounds like the best next step.

I have had the same symptoms as a result of Trazadone for sleep - when I would get up from bed or stand up abruptly from sitting I sometimes become dizzy, lightheaded. This is a known side effect from Trazadone called hypostatic hypertension (sudden increase in blood pressure upon standing). I can manage it at a lower dose of Trazadone (50mg) but it’s much worse when on higher dosages or when dehydrated (I had several fainting spells last summer). My doctor wants me off Trazadone completely but I take it for my insomnia - difficult trade off.

Let your Doctor know what’s happening as it may not be due to the Trazadone. I’ve been taking it for many years and find 25 mg is just as effective as 50mg. My Doctor has told me it’s not addictive, but the psychological dependence is real. If you really want to stop, I’d cut in half for a week or two, then cut in half again for the same amount of time, then stop.
