Taking vitamin supplements with heart meds
My husband had a stemi in May. He got a stent and started the standard heart meds. It’s been over 3 months and his EF has went from 25% to 55%. I would like to add some natural supplements to support his health. Our ultimate goal is to replace the meds with more natural alternatives. Any advice would be appreciated. He’s on aspirin, plavix, crestor, entresto, jardiance, and Coreg. He does have bradycardia-hr stays at about 50-60 all day. We aren’t sure if this is from meds or the heart issue. Thanks again.

That sounds really good. My Dad has been a heart patient since 2000, after quadruple bypass and 4 stents over the years. He’s done exceptionally well on full cardiac meds and actually improved his EF while in his 80’s! My understanding is that supplements really need to be discussed with the cardiologist. Daddy takes Vitamin D and B12, with doctor’s instruction. Based on my Dad’s results, I’m a believer in heart medication to prevent subsequent events and strokes. I do understand about the kidney concern.

Good advice from celia16. Need to discuss taking any supplements with your cardiologist or EP. Some can be very helpful and some can contradict your medications.
Potassium was listed as a supplment from some on MCC. My EP stated my lab tests showed I was at the upper end of normal for potassium and not to take anymore.
My EP, heart failure, and cardiologist (Mayo Clinic) did recommend Co-Q-10 to offset the affect statins have on co-q-10. HF asked me to take fish oil. My EP wanted me to take magnesium as was good for PVCs. But all these supplements were with coordination with my medical providers.
He is on a lot of medications. Asked your physicians to look at all of them as needed and if there are any supplements they would recommend or not recommend if you list them. I know beet powder can reduce blood pressure but you don't want it to go to low either.
I wish I had his EF my has been at 25% for a decade. But at least is stopped going down. I am on Entresto, Coreg, mexilitene, Epiderone (spell on those last two). Be safe talk to the medical professionals before adding supplments.
Consult with his cardiologist, please.
Replace the meds with more natural alternatives is not a good idea.
His cardiologist has told us that she cannot give us medical advice on supplements since they aren’t fda approved, so to take what we feel would be beneficial but she couldn’t give us advice in that area.
WHAT IS GOOD FOR MY HEART
Welcome @jamesmulroney, I'm not sure anyone can answer your question. This is a good question to discuss with your doctor. I think what is good for your heart depends on many factors related to your personal health and your doctor may have some suggestions base on your current health condition.
Did you read about something that is good for your heart?
IMO the answer related, is not suitable for the question asked.
Now, IF the answer had been, "I am prescribing what the community of knowledge believes is best. Further, you should be aware there is very limited oversight of the supplements in stores by the government." That is all correct, and the last sentence a warning not to assume the materials in the supplements market are safe, or are even what is noted on the containers.
Maybe his cardiologist gave you an answer you are looking for. “Do what you feel is beneficial, I’m not going to recommend any supplements.”
