How long do you take Gabapentin?

Posted by ttibsen @ttibsen, Sep 9, 2020

My wife got a Rx for Gabapentin yesterday to deal with chronic pain affecting her lower right leg below the knee. They couldn’t find anything obviously wrong and I guess that in those situations they fall back on Gabapentin. The instructions simply said take as needed and I am somewhat sceptical of this as it’s my understanding that Gabapentin is not like an analgesic which you do take on an as needed basis. I thought that for Gabapentin, once you start the meds, you continue at least until the meds is finished. She was given a one month supply.

I have had severe spinal stenosis and scoliosis with really bad nerve pain in my back and neck from playing football ncaa wrestling for several years now with no operations; I take 900mg of gabapentin a day with a half pill of 5mg Vicodin with 355mg acetaminophen (3 times a day 300mg gabapentin and a half pill of the above) which works wonders for me. Gives me a good quality of life.

What is the best way to wean off Pregabalin 50 2x daily?

I take it at night for pain and take one in the morning to help with pain during the day. I was temporarily very low so taking way less than I should and found that the pain returned and made very dysfunctional. Life is a lot harder without it.

I’ve been taking gabapentin for years for nerve pain . I used to take it only when I had pain . I would take it for a few days and then stop if the shocks and pain also stopped . I used to take it like that for years . Then I had a serious episode and now take it everyday for about 6 months . It works well for some and not so well for others . Some have side effects that others don’t . Combined with Cymbalta it keeps the pain at bay for me . I’m willing to deal with the side effects as long as it deadens the pain .

I take 300mg of Gabapentin at bedtime. My worst pain and numbness is at night. My pain and numbness developed after total knee replacement. Gabapentin has helped. I've been taking it for 6 months. Best of luck to your wife.

I know they say that it takes a few weeks to take affect and has to be taken all the time but I have been taking it on an as needed basis for years. I would tell my doctors that and they looked at me weird cause thats not what the literature says! They Pharma company does a study way back when and decides dosage and they don't usually go back and listen to the patient.
I did take it on a regular basis at one time when my pain was very bad, so my thought is that on some level my nerve endings have a memory for this drug?
Anyway, in answer to your question, I take 100mg as needed and mostly at bed when pain is intolerable, as it can make me dizzy and can make me disoriented..

Due to my NA cirrhosis, I've weened myself off of various meds. Have various neuro-muscularskeletal issues (auto accidents/falls), so have chronic pain. I tolerate, but neck pain was severe and gave in to my gabapentin treatment: 3-100mg/3 dys; 2-100mg/3dys; 1-100mg/3dys. Got thru the sleepiness & the intense pain eased up. I try to reduce chronic inflammation; flare-ups with clean ingredients; turmeric; cloves; ginger; celery. Trying different combos. Gotta stay motivated.

I am now trying Emgality injections- my first dose was doubled. I got severe migraines within hours of the injections, Doctor does not feel the first dose ofEmgality made those headaches. So 4days later after trying my over the counter migraine meds, finally stopped.
And 3 weeks in, I felt unstable, like deep black hole.
Informed doctors- no change ( and I already have depression, and they take chances on let’s try this drug.)
I’m trying 1 more dose, Jan.12-see if any of the head pain is relieved..
otherwise I’m not fighting anymore, if headaches don’t go away- I hope I go away..
