Swimming with Lichen Sclerosus

Is anyone swimming in a pool regularly with Lichen sclerosus?

My favorite way to exercise is to swim. I'm moving to warmer weather and will have my own pool...but now I'm scared, depressed, and hateful towards the way my life is forever with this disease.

I've read to apply extra barrier ointment, rinse/wash off pool chemicals and change out of a wet bathing suit bottom immediately after. I guess I better buy plenty of swim bottoms. 😭

I would talk to your doctor. For me, the chemicals that they put in the water make things worse. And you can do the salt water, but that still is a lot of chemicals in that. I would keep an eye on your lichen For a few months and see if things get worse or better.
They may not want to swimming in the pool with all kinds of chemicals on your body, cause it might affect other swimmers. You need to check that out.
I wish you the very best going down this road of inquiry

Maybe a salt water pool would work better for you. Happy swimming 🏊

It will not impact other swimmers as LS is not contagious. I've enjoyed swimming with no issues. Every one can respond differently. It is great exercise and good for overall body health. I agree with changing shortly after swimming and applying whatever you use after cleaning and drying. Putting extra layers of ointment on to go swimming seems unnecessary as it will just rinse away. Enjoy your swim and take care of yourself afterwards. It's simple. Don't try to make it complex. I personally use Lisepten salve and apply it in a reasonable time after cleaning up. Don't stress over it, after all, stress contributes to symptoms. Just develop a healthy routine. Swimming is a part of staying healthy.

@echapman thank you for this information and words of encouragement! Right now I'm using Vaseline but looked into the Lisepten. Curious about the tea too.

The Lisepten tea tastes great. I add a bit of stevia to sweeten it. I use some as a sitz bath at times as well.
