Swelling after total hip replacement

Posted by myfriendgayle @myfriendgayle, May 2, 2023

I have mild to moderate thigh, calf and foot swelling in my operated leg following total hip replacement April 21. Ice and elevation keep it from swelling more, but doesn’t seem to decrease it. Has anyone else had this problem? If so, what did you do about it!

I am scheduled for a left total hip replacement in the middle of June. Are there any exercises that I should be doing in order to prepare for the surgery? Also, has anyone had the surgery with the MACO robot and spinal anesthesia? If so, are you awake during the surgery or is an intravenous line placed to give you sedation?

I had a THR 4 months ago. I did not do any exercises before that time but I'm sure if you do a Google search you will come up with plenty of them. I had a spinal but before that I had an IV with plenty of sedation. I felt absolutely nothing until the nurse woke me up hours after surgery telling me to get up and get out of bed. Before I was allowed to go home I had to climb a set of stairs using crutches. Of course the nurses were there every step of the way. I was absolutely going home and needed to focus to pass the test. I had a complex hip replacement but went home that same night.

I had left hip replacement (my 12th due to several hip dislocations)
On 8/15 after having an antibiotic spacer for 10 previous months. I am healing well. But My left foot and right above my ankle swell all the time and actual look blackened
The skin is hard and extremely dry . I never experienced this before in all my other surgeries.
Is this normal I wonder
I can finally put my foot down after 10 months of only Toe touching and still use walker . Hopefully no further infection and I can get my life back at 74

I would check the ankle swelling and darkening, etc. with your orthopedist.

i would check with a vascular dr....have them order ultrasounds of veins and arteries to make sure no issues there.

I had a hip replacement Sept 22. I am still healing. I think you may have some different things going on, I also had excessive swelling in my whole operated leg and also my tummy. Even my Doctor thought it was normal swelling. Turned out it was not swelling, it was fluid retention from a UTI. After antibiotic, it went down to almost normal.

Hi @vmwjbc , I moved your discussion and combined it with an existing discussion titled "swelling after total hip replacement," https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/swelling-after-total-hip-replacement/.

Here, you can meet many other members discussing symptoms similar to yours, like @myfriendgayle, @chriskay, @joannemargie, and @monica1234.

You mentioned you can finally put your foot down after 10 months. Are you able to start moving around some now and does that make your swelling worse?

Thank you Justin
The swelling is worse when I just sit too long
Yes I put the wheelchair in another room
Trying to walk around my house at least every hour
With the walker
Or go out on my deck
Thank you for your reply

I had a total hip replacement at age 77 Aug 30th. I had swelling in my entire leg and into my foot for 6 weeks after surgery. Time for healing has almost completely eliminated the swelling. At 5 weeks post surgery my surgeon said I am half way healed. I am walking well but still doing PT to strengthen my leg muscles. For some unknown reason my surgery took 3 and a half hours instead of the 1 and a quarter we were told it would take. Surgeon won’t say why. I am happy I am healing so well and am once again mobile. I should be driving in a couple more weeks which would be 8 weeks post surgery. It is my right hip. Best wishes to you for total healing and no more pain.
