Did you use supplements or holistic approaches with traditional tx?

Hello all. My husband was just diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Needless to say Im scared to death. He is going for additional imaging and his biopsy this week to stage it and make sure it hasnt spread. Praying it hasnt.
Question.....what supplements are people taking? Im a believer in holistic medicine and want to add that along with western. Doc wants him to start chemo and then surgery in April. I got moringa, tumeric and soursop so far. I look forward to your responses. Thank you

I have used horse Apple and grapeseed for my husband. The brand of the horse Apple which is also called Osage orange that I use is maclura

My husband was given the advice by his Nutritionist at MSK to immediately start taking Turkey Tail Mushroom supplement.He uses the recommended Sinco-Sci brand recommended by her. He takes (2) capsules=1,000mg each morning and evening. It is an excellent immune support for Cancer. You can get it through Amazon and Walmart. I am a true believer in these type of supplements. I know exactly the “scary” feelings that are hitting you now. Please take one day at a time and contact me if you have any questions.

Grape seeds, chestnut honey for blood values. For immunity, grape molasses, bitter, turmeric. But don't overdo it.

@kmbori
Try to hold off on adding to many things until you get all the testing done and reviewed. Depending on their course of action, there will be a lot of supplements that he won’t be able to use, as was the case with mu husband. You are in my prayers now.

@kmbori, I completely agree with @kjc12. You might want to wait before adding any supplements or complementary therapies until after your husband is finished the diagnostic procedures and he has talked with the cancer team. Some treatments can influence test results and some natural remedies can negatively interact with standard treatment.

Natural or holistic doesn't always mean safe.

I do recommend that you ask about integrative oncology options.

More and more cancer centers and oncology specialists are open to discussing and integrating complementary medicine in programs called Integrative Medicine or Integrative Oncology. Integrative medicine can guide you to supplements, therapies and approaches that help manage cancer treatment lasting side effects. Integrative medicince is offered at many cancer centers of excellence, including Mayo Clinic.

In agreement with Colleen’s post. Upon advice from another, I have always asked to speak to the pharmacist in my infusion center to learn of any contraindications with a particular supplement and my treatment. As an example, I found green tea extract, turmeric, and a few other things NOT cohesive with what I was doing! Until treatment begins, I think the best avenue is muscle building/exercise, protein forward meals, multivitamin and perhaps D3. The stronger and healthier one is going into this, the easier the treatment may go.
Stay strong. go beat it!!

Thank you for the info. I agree I will hold off on some of the supplements. He did his MRI, CT and biopsy this week. Waiting on results - however CT showed ascites, 3 lymph nodes and possible small liver involvement but no other organs or chest at this time. Im literally a nervous wreck. I just keep praying and trying not to cry in front of him too much. We go for the consultation and to get all results on Wed of next week. So I will discuss supplements then.
and Ill look up if they offer integrative therapy as well. He thinks this came from all of his deployments - he served for 20 years - they were doing burn pits that have apparently been causing soldiers to have cancer. Which honestly just pisses me off more.

If you want to schedule an appointment at Mayo for integrative medicine, it’s best to call right away because their appointments can be a month or longer out.

I do not take any supplements except for vitamins. Your husband will need enzymes (creon) to take with meals and snacks. Your doctor can get them for you.
