Supplements: How do I know right balance of vitamins & minerals?

Posted by dablues @dablues, Jul 26, 2021

I am starting to take Selenium 200 mcg, Vitamin C powder 1/2 tsp 2 or 3 times a day, & Magnesium. 500 mg. Now I know everyone says ask your doctor, but when I asked my doctor about supplements his answer was if you want to waste your money go ahead, so that is of no help to me. I have low thyroid, High Blood Pressure, High Cholesterol, and take probiotic, and a stomach pill which is pantoprazole which does not help me. Also, iron for anemia due to AVM's, and fish oil pill. Sounds like a lot but even though I think I eat right I don't know if I'm getting the right amounts of minerals or vitamins in my body. So hope someone will help since my doctor doesn't believe in supplements.

I highly recommend you meet with an Integrated medicine doctor. They are very knowledgeable about determining what vitamin and mineral supplements you need.

Welcome @ritabtripp, It sounds like you have had a good experience with integrative medicine. I also think it's a good idea to discussion supplements with your doctor to make sure it helps vs making things worse. For those not familiar with integrative medicine, Mayo Clinic has some information here - https://www.mayoclinic.org/tests-procedures/complementary-alternative-medicine/about/pac-20393581.

Are you able to share your experience on how an integrative medicine doctor helped you?

BTW the last link about herbal supplements is not working.
Thank you for sharing Mayo info.

I do take a probiotic and only Vitamin D and B12 supplements after going to an Integrative Health Specialist at Mayo Clinic. They recommend all other nutrients come from a healthy diet. I follow their 1-2-3 plan for fruits and vegetables. One at breakfast, two at lunch and three at supper. It is an easy plan to follow.

That plan sounds very easy to follow and very helpful! Thank you so much for sharing!

Get a blood panel on your vitamin and mineral levels from any reputable laboratory and where you are deficient, then discuss it with your doctor.

I agree with @mporaneos. My doctor tested me for a variety of vitamin and mineral levels to determine what I needed. Retesting is also important after 6-12 months to see if what you are taking is working and if adjustments need to be made to the doses of each you are taking, especially as you make better food choices for the vitamin and minerals you need. Sometimes too much is also not a good thing either.
One of the things I did for selenium is eating Brazil nuts - 3 to 4 each morning.

It does sound easy but I don't do well with fruit. It upsets my stomach. It could be the sugar. I don't eat so-called sweets because they also upset my stomach. I doubt I'm the only one who has this problem. So I do take a lot of vitamins. I must be doing something right because I am 88 years old and still able to live independently and drive myself wherever I need to go.

I just saw the earlier post asking me just working with an integrated medicine doctor had helped me. I had constant sinus infections for 10 years and virtually lived on antibiotics and prednisone (because the sinus infections caused my asthma to flare up). My life improved dramatically when I went to an integrated medicine doctor who did a blood test to look at good sensitivities. I had asked my internal medicine doctor, my allergist and my ENT to do a food allergy test and all declined because they said they weren’t reliable and I could figure it out on my own. My food allergy test showed a severe sensitivity to dairy, eggs and a few other things. I had already figured out I was sensitive to wine and alcohol because I reacted immediately to those substances with immediate sinus issues but the dairy and eggs were delayed reactions. Once I eliminated dairy, eggs and alcohol I saw immediate results. Now I may get a sinus infection once a year. Before I literally ended one round of antibiotics and started another round. After seeing such significant improvement in my health I decided that I might be able to become even healthier with the assistance of the integrated medicine doctor. I found out I was low on zinc and she ordered a few other supplements since I still tended to get sick frequently. But the most important lesson I learned is that diet makes a huge difference in our health. I was severely constipated for 40 years and thought it was normal. Now that my diet is 80-90% vegetables and fruit, I no longer suffer from constipation.
