Suggestions how prepare for 1st Evenity injection prevent side effects

Posted by wili22 @wili22, Jan 21 8:42pm

Hi, I have been diagnosed with severe osteoporosis based on 2 Dexa scans. I have had an autoimmune condition, ITP. I will receive my first Evenity shot and would like to decrease possible side effects. Any positive suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I didn't have any noticeable side effects. I have heard that some folks apply a cold pack immediately after the shots but I never needed that. I had great results with evenity. Just make sure you are prepared to discuss with your doc what comes next in your drug sequencing after evenity

@gravity3 Great you had good results. Thank you for sharing your experience with Evenity, for the cold pack idea and discussion with Dr about what comes next. I will write that down. Much appreciated!

I began having left leg pain on month 10 of my evenity which has only increased. Now have rt hip pain after my follow up reclast shot. Walking is very painful
My dexa scores are increased by 9
but the leg pain is unbearable. My endocrinologist tells me this is not a siide effect but my reading here and in history of evenity says different
Yesterday I toid her no further tx. My arthritis is really painful since evemity injections. Hands. Hips and feet mostly
So I am back to hot tub and exercises only.

@wili22 I did 12 months of Evenity injections with no side effects. I had a little soreness at the injection sites (I received the standard two injections) for about 24 hours. That happened a few times and the soreness was similar to what I sometimes experience with flu and COVID vaccinations.

@naturegirl5 Thank you for sharing your experience with the injections. Hope you continue to have good results. Best!

I take a Claritin in the morning of the day I get my shot. After the shot I drink 32 ounces of electrolyte enhanced water (I use Relyte) over the next 30 to 45 minutes. I also take two Tylenol at that time. I try to stay hydrated for the rest of the day.

Over the course of the next few days, I have some mild soreness in my arms where I had the shots. I also experience some joint pain for up to a week afterwards which dissipates over the next week or so.

Is Evinity the same class of drug as Prolia? I suffered severe tendinitis on Prolia. I have been on Foxamax for about three years and now have turned up what feels like tendinitis in my shins.

Hi, Evenity is a monoclonal antibody made of protein that goes directly to the bone. Hope you feel better and continue to heal!

@barbyb50 That’s great news your bones have improved! Thank you for sharing your experience. Hope your side effects decrease. I am working on improving my sleep hygiene since I have issues waking up really early.
How long after your injections do the side effects begin and how long do they last? I’m strategizing how to schedule around work. Thank you again!

@wili22 my side effects of joint pain and insomnia come and go. The joint pain can be every day, or sporadic. Usually I notice it more at night.
That’s why it would be hard to plan re work, etc.
I hope you can get good sleep!

I have been on evenity for 6 months. Here is what has worked for me,
1: abdomen shots. I get all my shots in my abdomen and I get both at the same time.
2: hydration: Drink water , tons of water, avoy caffeine the day before and the day of. If I drink a coffee the day before or on I will get such a migraine.
3: Have someone drive you to your first shots. I drove myself the first time and I regret it so bad, my abdomen was so soar.
4: Try to take it when you have the next day off. I schedule mine of Fridays so I don't work the next day, my body feels crappy and Bleh that I just lay in bed
5: Warm/Cold compress. I have a hot water bottle I put on my abdomen to help with the site pain, I also add some cold the day after to help.

I wish you the best! You got this!

Wow! I'm so glad I stumbled across this community group this morning when i was doing some random searching about some other symptoms related to a shoulder injury.

I was diagnosed with severe osteoporosis after a broken shoulder failed to heal - as in ZERO bone growth - over the course of 4 months... I'm now recovering from a total reverse total shoulder replacement 14 weeks ago... and am scheduled for my first shot of EVENITY this Friday.

I am taking all of the above to heart...
I won't get the injection until late(r) in the day;
Will have heat and cold at the ready;
My husband will be driving;
I've told my husband that Saturday is a "me" day - for recovery;
I use electrolyte replacement drinks (Hydralyte tabs) already for another condition - so will make sure I have lots cold and ready to drink;

What is the (perceived?) benefit of Claritin (or will any antihistamine do)?

What about insomnia? Anything work? I have used melatonin supplements in the past but I' ve been off it entirely since before my surgery... my body has enough hormone "issues" between stress (cortisol) and hypothyroidism I don't want to be messing around with supplementing with more hormones...

Also - the reference to Aleve.... Will Tylenol (regular, extra strength or for arthritis) not work?
I was prescribed Naproxen (Aleve) as pain control after my initial injury. I stopped cold turkey after it became undeniably apparent - at Week 6 - that there was no bone growth... The research I did - trying to understand my lack of healing - showed that NSAID's - like Naproxen - can impair/compromise bone growth. I wasn't taking much Naproxen by that time but I have vowed never to use it again... which is sad because it has been my drug of choice for years when an old knee injury flares up.
