Sugestion for good walking shoes for a 90-plus-year-old?

Posted by ciddy1931 @ciddy1931, Dec 26, 2024

Am reluctant to walk as much as I probably should. Am 93 and in good general health but quite fearful of possiblly falling. I feel that if I had a pair of sturdy walking shoes I would be inclined to walk much more. Any suggstions?

I just bought my first pair of Brooks. They’re a running shoe but great for walking also(I was told). They’re the most comfortable shoe I tried. I had a good experience at Fleet Feet ☺️. Good luck!

Brooks is a quality brand and great reputation. Always worth trying out. Plus they have an excellent return policy. I think 90 days full refund, even if you wear the shoe! In my opinion though they used to make higher quality shoes, like most other manufacturers used to.

A few weeks ago I bought a pair of YakTrax shoe chains...just in case, since our Durham NC weather now seldom snows. (I got the chains because the spiral spring trax have poor reviews.)

Yay, it snowed and sleeted last night, and I got a chance to test them.

They are very comfortable and very effective in providing non-slip walking in ice and snow.
In case of an extended freeze, they will allow safe walking from our home to the car and mailbox, and safe dog walking.
I recommend them highly, especially for those of us for whom a fall could be disastrous.

I am 83 and have a wide foot and high arches. I wear Hoka Gaviotas and also Altra brand, their Lone Pine Model. I also use ABEO insoles with the metatarsul bump .

Alta brand is known for no drop from heel to toe, wide toe box.

Hoka brand I have seen nurses, doctors and runners I know wear. Also, an 82-year-old i know.
I googled a site. The best walking shoes for seniors to keep you active and moving.

yes they are very good for walking I was a nurse and wore them. But now am older and they are quite expensive, as you should only wear them for walking daily atleast 6 mos for getting another pair. That is what most recommend. for me itis the price. but thanks for the advice appreciate it.

@ciddy1931 I have many feet issues and have had three surgeries, one of which was reconstructive. I over pronate, have fallen arches, fat pad atrophy and a bunion. I find that having custom made orthotics helps significantly, my podiatrist made in his lab. I wear Brooks Adrenaline from morning until night, they offer great support. At night I wear Vionic slide sandals for surpport (get up several times nightly). I might suggest visiting a good sports shoe store that can fit you for a good shoe. Fleet Feet is one store that is good as they will watch you walk and do an analysis on what shoe would be best for you specifically.

Walking poles can help too. Perhaps someone here can give some brand suggestions.

I think they may also be referred to as trekking poles.
