Sudden temporary blindness in both eyes
I had a scary experience a couple of years ago and have never received an explanation. I was just sitting in a chair doing nothing and suddenly my vision disappeared completely in both eyes. No after images, nothing. It only lasted a few seconds but really scared me. Then my heart started beating wildly for a brief period. I asked my neurologist if it was related to vestibular migraines and he said no, and to let him know if it happened again. ?!!!??? I don’t want it to ever happen again. What if I was driving? Before this I had a concussion which was not resolving and a brain MRI which showed a mild, right brain stem lacunar stroke. Have seen a cardiologist, ophthalmologist, neuro ophthalmologist, optometrist, and have had no answers. Has “anyone” experienced something like this or have any idea what could cause it? It seems like blindness in one eye is more common but I can not find out much of anything on sudden temporary blindness in both eyes at once.

Wow, thank you for sharing the video explaining the curtain sight loss. I makes sense as one neuro was concerned that I may have had undetectable stroke - she never mention that sight loss episode thought. Hope the blood thinner does the job for you as the TIA sound like scary harbingers.

Thank you. I hope you find the reason it’s happening to you so something worse doesn’t happen. The blood supply is temporarily being cut off and that’s never good. Maybe a cardiac checkup would be worth the trouble for you?
I don’t say this to scare anyone, but just as a precautionary tale. My slender, fit, always healthy 56 year old brother had no idea he had a coronary artery that was 99% blocked until he had a massive heart attack after carrying some heavy boxes. Who knew??? Be safe. Best of luck!

1 ReactionI knew of someone who had a retina displacement and that was the cause
of him going blind temporarily. He did regain his sight but it was a few days.

1 ReactionHi I also had the same experience watching TV and then nothing for maybe a minute scared me so I closed my eyes and after a little bit it was gone. My first thought was I'm loosing my eyesight. I have have melanoma in my left eye and so we put this being a side effect . So no ER visit . At my next visit at the mayo clinic telling the doctor my experience he told me it could have been a mild stroke and if it ever accured again to go right away to the ER what I'm definitely going to do. Not sure if it's the same as yours but wanted you to know you're not alone.

1 ReactionI had the same kind of experience but with only half of my vision. I could only see half of a page on a book or half of the room I was in, it didn't last long but it was scary. Went to the eye doctor and he said I had an ocular stroke and was lucky that the clot kept on moving, sent me to a cardiologist and I am going through lots of test now.
2 years ago my eyes pixelated. I couldn't see anything it looked like I was looking through a kaleidoscope, lasted an hour. They called that an ocular migraine. Really interesting what new things are happening or happening to me any way. Lets all pray that it doesn't happen again.

1 ReactionSounds like a migraine aura without the head pain.
@klancee47
I hope your cardiologist helps you figure it out. My first experience was both eyes suddenly pixelated/kaleidoscope just as you described. Then I had a few times where I briefly lost partial vision in one eye. All ocular strokes / amaurosis fugax. Then finally I had a couple cognitive TIAs aka mini-stroke. Now I’m finally taking blood thinners because every incident was right after a long episode of afib so caused by a blood clot that luckily freed itself each time. Scary each time. I’m not having any issues taking Eliquis and haven’t had any more episodes in the 4 months I’ve been taking it. Best of luck to you.

Still have two more cardiologist apt. before I get to take to the doctor, they have lots of tests they want me to do first.
