Hi, @josephjr, and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. Sounds like the hearing being shut off when you press your finger at the base of your ear is perplexing.

I'd like to introduce you to some other members who may have some thoughts for you, like @alwaysgail @oregongirl @floridagirl128 @rose4622 @jmlane @hopeful33250 @lioness.

In the meantime, you may be interested in this Mayo Clinic slide show with information on how we hear https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/hearing-loss/multimedia/ear-infections/sls-20077144.

Do you have any history of hearing loss, @josephjr?

Hello @josephjr

I would like to join Lisa, (@lisalucier) in welcoming you to Mayo Connect.

I am sorry to hear of the hearing loss you are experiencing. It must be concerning to you as well as frustrating.

If you are comfortable sharing more: How long has this been happening (is it a recent event or ongoing for a while)? Have you had any other problems of an ENT nature such as sinus infections, etc.? Any tinnitus (ringing in the ear)?

Have you talked with your primary care doctor or a ENT specialist yet?
