Sudden inability to focus, dizziness, double vision: Is it a stroke?

Posted by sb4ca @sb4ca, Jul 8, 2023

Hi, I have a severe herpes zoster viral infection in my eyes that is getting much better with steroid eye drops and oral anti-viral. I have extreme dizziness when I stand up and never thought to ask the eye dr about it. Now I've done research and found that ocular cranial nerve palsies can produce this kind of thing. When I try to watch TV I get double vision but closing one eye makes it go away. Has anyone had something similar?

Possibly from an injury to head or eye, and also possible to thyroid issues. I took have double vision that goes away when covering one eye, right or left doesn't matter. Haven't had it checked out yet, but should. Maybe a trip to emergency room is in order. Couldn't hurt but probably help.

I empathize with you on the double vision. I have dealt with this condition for years and even have had the muscle eye surgery [forget the name] on one eye. It helped temporarily, but did not resolve the issue. My last visit to the double vision specialist resulted in him telling me there was not anything he could do for me because I have so many eye issues. I also have macular degeneration, scarred corneas, tilted vision, and others! LOL!! I always have the double vision. Sometimes worse, sometimes better. I purchased an eye patch for wheni it is bad because I found that I was squinting and closing one eye without even realizing it. One time, I joked with friends that I thought I would go watch tv, but that my double vision problem currently left me with seeing three tv screens and it was a little frustrating! LOL! I don't mean to make light of it. I know how frustrating it is, believe me. I just try to make the best of things with a little laughter, but it certainly does not minimize the difficulties it presents. At this moment, while writing this comment, I am struggling with it! There are things they can do and just living with it by squinting, covering an eye, can even create more strain on your eyes. If it is a muscle affecting your vision, there is a surgery they can do to correct it, and they can also add prisms to your glasses [whether it be Rx glasses or reading glasses], and there is probably more things they can do. This is just what I have learned from my experiences. I'm not trying to be a "know it all", just offering up some info. Mine cannot be helped because I have so many other eye conditions, but trust me, if there were something I could do about it, I woould. I have lived with this too many years. Hope this helps!
