Subluxing SI ever since hip replaced

Posted by jdp3 @jdp3, Mar 6 8:28am

I had a hip replacement 4 years ago that resulted in a small leg length discrepancy that apparently led to a tendency of my SI joint to partially dislocate. This is painful and triggers awful muscle spasms. It can be temporarily “fixed” by osteopathic manipulation and manual therapy but as soon as I sit funny or lie in bed it happens again. Shoe lift can help but then I’ll see a physician who says it’s bad to use them so I try to get rid of it, hoping all the PT will finally work if only I try hard enough. But no. I wind up back in the cycle of pain. I should mention that I’m hypermobile which doesn’t help. I’m at wits end. Has anyone else here experienced similar and found a solution?

Sorry you have this painful time 4 years in. Ongoing pain is very difficult and I can relate to that personally. Heading into 6th year here. No diagnosis and all types of tests and found sleep improved by chiro technique since last summer. Down to 2 per month from 3 per week. Glad my sleep improved. Other physios without results. Reducing meds which I'm thankful for.

Has any new health plan or changes come up for you since posting here? Sure hope so. You're definitely not alone here and it's good you found your way to Mayo. Wonder if gentle swimming with hot tub use might offer some comfort? Let me know how it's going for you. Take care. *♡☆.

@ellesea01 thank you for this kind post. For about a year the pain level had gone down with low dose naltrexone but I slept on a soft mattress while visiting family about two months ago and my SI slipped badly and sent me into another flare. I can get temporary relief with massage or trigger point injections but it’s short term- just a day or two every time.
Ibuprofen helps with the pain but I use it sparingly and also ice helps at the si joint itself during a bad flare.
Sometimes when I can’t sleep I lie on an acupressure mat which helps for a few hours. It’s just a constant battle. Swimming would be great but it’s hard to do because I work full time.
