Struggling with Anal Fissure in My 7-Month-Old – Need Advice

Posted by raffaellatn @raffaellatn, Mar 1 10:33am

Hi everyone,

We’re currently facing the same issue with my 7‑month‑old son. We’ve tried every cream and give him sitz baths twice a day, but nothing seems to help. We’re from Germany, and unfortunately, no doctor so far has been able to resolve it 😩.

We’ve been waiting for 8 weeks for an appointment with a specialist, and in the meantime, he’s still in pain.

Has anyone experienced this with their baby? What treatments or remedies actually helped? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks so much in advance.

@raffaellatn I can only imagine what you and your little one are going through and wish I could help you, but I can assure you that you have come to the right place to seek help while waiting for your appointment with the specialist. I am sure someone on Mayo Clinic Connect will respond.

Have you asked the specialist’s receptionist to put your son on a possible waiting list for an earlier in appointment in the case of a cancellation? Most medical offices have a waiting list. A baby should not have to go through this much pain and discomfort.

I’m so sorry to hear about your son’s suffering!
Does your son have hard bowel movements? Also, what does he eat and drink?

Having had an anal fissure, I can understand how painful it is for your little guy. I used a really thick coat of zinc oxide cream to try and create as much of a barrier as possible since some of my pain was from contact with loose stool.

Have you tried a cream with lidocaine or other topical anesthetic? It would be temporary relief but might help.

Hi,
I suffer with this regularly and have discovered a Johnson and Johnson skin relief moisturising lotion Aveeno product dose wonders, immediately. I'm not sure if this would be appropriate for someone so young but you could check it out for yourself.

Hi,
Aveeno skin relief moisturising lotion is the name, by Johnson & Johnson ltd. Just had to use it again and it definitely solves fissure problems immediately. I have been using it for years but warn you a little goes a long way. You don't need to cake it on. Less messy than anything else I tried. I have chronic constipation from kidney damage and when I have a particularly bad patch I use a little extra and let it soak into the underwear for good measure. It sooths the itching immediately and I assume it heals the fissures as the problem is solved straight away, until the next time.

Thank you for your advice! He will have a rectoscopy under general anesthesia on Thursday. From the outside, the doctor said the fissure appears to be closed and doesn’t understand why he is still in such severe pain… When I gently open the sphincter at the 6 o’clock position, I can see some redness — I think there may still be a fissure there that’s causing him trouble.

Everything will be examined on Thursday, and if there is still a fissure, a fissurectomy will be performed since this has been going on for so long 😭😭😭 I really hope everything goes well. I’m scared of the anesthesia and the time afterward… my poor baby.

Hi
You are more than welcome. I have no idea what made me try it other than desperation, I'm glad I did. If it fails at least it is good for dry skin as well and won't be a waste of money.

I completely agree with you that any and all substances that have even a slight chance of success are worthy of trying, even those that are somewhat unconventional. I've applied all kinds of potions to my anus in the past few years and have a drawer full of failures but also about 3 that proved helpful. Desperation when you're in so much pain is a powerful motivator.
