What is Stapedectomy Recovery like?

Posted by megwest512 @megwest512, May 2, 2022

I got a stapedectomy in my left ear last August and on 2 occasions (lasting a few days) have been experiencing very weird tinnitus and sensations with my hearing. Whooshing sounds and vibrations and echoing in both of my ears as well as a weird gurgling that I can feel in my left ear. I just started again last night.
My hearing improved some after the surgery but it is still not great. Does this sound familiar to anyone? I'd love to hear if anyone has experienced this before. Thanks!

I was awake but they could’ve amputated an arm and I couldn’t have done anything about it; I think it’s called twilight sleep. It wasn’t bad and it was interesting to see what was going on.

I just now realized I can ‘hear’ myself. I hadn’t been talking but I just called my mother to give her update and now I have a total headache because I’m so loud. Things to get used to.

I just had second stapendectomy piston replacement in my right ear.
My voice is super loud to myself inside my head. Cannot hear out of right ear due to packing and blood patch.
It’s not my left ear it’s my right I just had surgery on. Going to ask doc about it. He did use a smaller piston in my right ear versus left.
Left ear was 12 22 and still has popping of what I think is how ear drum healed?. But can hear things I haven’t been able too in years!

So glad I found this group. Wish I had seen this before my Stapedectomy 1 month ago. I'm wishing I never had the surgery at all. 😞 I have had constant ringing in my ear since my surgery that I never had before. Still don't hear well and have had strange uncomfortable noises and feelings of being in a bubble. I'm worried that it won't get better and am experiencing a lot of anxiety.
I made an extra appointment with my doctor today. He drained some liquid and removed scabs, but still have the ear ringing, don't hear well and a new very weird terrible sensation of my head like blowing off and the room moving
when I sneeze or burp.
Please let these be temporary and let all be well soon 🙏

I had Stapedectomy a little longer than one year ago, due to Otosclerosis. My operative ears now hears so well I wish I could hear less. This complication (yes, it is a complication) called Hyperacusis or hypersensitivity to the sound. Everything is heard louder than it really is, even my own voice, not to mention unloading dishes, dog barking, baby screaming, cars/track passing by... The sound changes shortly when I yawn (from roaring to hissing to booming, etc). Never experienced tinnitus after the surgery for more than a week after packing removal. Some dizziness ( more like unsteadiness has developed in a few month after the surgery, but happens less and less frequently. Doctor said it will eventually disappears by itself. My advise: when it happens, try to look strait ahead, not down to the floor. Best thing of all (from my own experience and doctor agrees)- get into the car and drive, because you only look strait and concentrate when driving.
For now, I have to use an ear plug on cotton ball to be able to attend concerts or movies. My surgeon, who is very experienced and caring, along with another colleagues are still puzzled why its still going on. This can happen, for a couple of weeks or month after Stapedectomy, but never happened in their practice for more that a year. They all attribute this to the brain adjustments, because my otosclerosis was with me for a very long time. It feels sometimes like a little progress is going on. So, we'll hope...

That is very interesting. I have had Stapedectomy's in both ears, 7 years apart, also due to Otosclerosis. I remember everything being louder for a few weeks after surgery, but attributed that to my ears adjusting to the new Stapes bone which wasn't working previously or was working poorly for some unknown period of time. But I never experienced extended Hyperacusis. After a few weeks my 2 ears were sounding very similar.

Then my 2nd stapes bone collapsed and I had to get the Stapedectomy in that ear. Same thing - louder in the new ear for a few weeks then the 2 ears seemed to sound the same. The only issue was I had some clicking in the 2nd ear. Doc had to go back in - turns out there was some scar tissue. Since then no problem until recently (10 years later). Now my left ear has deteriorated with word recognition so much that they are evaluating me for a CI. With Hearing Loss it's always something!

The full thread of this post is missing so I am not clear on the background.

I have experienced sudden (over a couple of months) decline in my hearing. I already had HL and wear aids, but now understanding is noticeably off and increasing the volume does not change this.

What I experience most is distortion in all sound even my own voice. Also any reflected sound (off a wall or sink) is noticeably loud. Not cleared, just loud. Is the hypercucis?

I now also experience a very discreet tinnitus pitch that start when I get up in the morning, but not before rising.

I have the same symptoms as yours, the distortions started a month after the stapedotomy operation, they continued to get worse and appear almost at any sound even at low frequency sounds, there is a screeching noise, when I drive the car the sound is terrible appears I can describe it as a cat purring in my ear. After 4 months, I was re-operated on the same ear, the doctor added some drops of blood around the prosthesis, believing that this would solve the problem. 10 days after the reoperation (revision) the distortions appeared again even more persistently, continuous cracking and distortions. Today I went to the doctor again and he proposed to replace the prosthesis with a Teflon one. I'm very desperate that I can't find a solution, my hearing has decreased after the reoperation, especially fine sounds, I can no longer hear them at all. The doctor is just testing the ear, believing that he is finding the problem, he told me that he has never encountered such a case before. Did you solve your problem? thanks in advance

I had a stapedectomy in my right ear three weeks ago on April 1, 2024, and the same happened to me. Things were very loud but simmered down. But since I've gotten the surgery, people sound like robots in that ear. Did anyone else experience that as well?
